Forse sono le vacanze, ma attenzione al Bernina Express. Abbiamo comprato i biglietti in anticipo, ma questo è l’incubo che vi aspetta a Tirano. I posti non sono prenotati e bisogna aspettare al freddo per ore. Assoluta sciocchezza, tipico disordine italiano e mancanza di organizzazione. O si cambia sistema oppure lo si evita.

I never took it, but seat reservations are mandatory no? at least thats what they say on their website:

I mean, hundreds of people wanting to go on the same trains is going to cause issues yes. That has nothing to do with Italy or anything else, it’s just tourism.

If you have the possibility I strongly suggest anyone to book a reserved place since all trains both going to St Moritz and Tirano are full… Unless you want to stand the whole journey. The worst part is that it’s not only the BEX that’s full but also the R19 and RE9 that are extremely crowded..
I hope you get a spot to sit since the train tickets aren’t cheap either…

It’s not a typical Italian mess, it’s a typical overtourism during the peak season at one of the most hyped, limited-availability attractions mess.
Also, going with not-booked seats was your choice. Reservations are mandatory on the actual Bernina Express, you just decided to take a train that runs on the same route but isn’t actually the Bernina Express.
