Why would the satrapy called Airstrip One do anything to upset it’s masters?
Safe-Avocado4864 on
Why would they? Seems like a fairly easy thing to say yes to since America is unlikely to want to go to Greenland via Scotland in the first place.

That ship just sailed. Lot of US military air traffic been turning up at UK /US airbases in the last few days.

I doubt the US is going to invade Greenland anyway but if it is its not going to go via the UK its on the other side of the North Atlantic. They will simply go from the mainland US which is considerably closer.
xParesh on
It would be a bad move to rule anything in or out.
The US are going to get what they want whatever we do.
Our only choice is whether we want to be on their good side or bad side.

I am confident that the British public (and not the bots, apologists and lettuces of Reddit) will show some objection.

They need to ask permission to use UK bases, so no doubt we would say no if they were stupid enough to ask.
That aside… Why on earth would they need UK bases? Isn’t the USA closer then us, or at least close to the same distance from the other way?
Oh, it’s just  Ed Davey asking a question he knows won’t get answered but will get a headline.

Never mind not using our bases, we should be sending soldiers to help our allies kill the invaders if they try

I can’t see a world where we would allow such a thing to happen from UK soil.Â
If Reform gets in in a few years, it could be a different matter. But I feel like that would trigger a full scale national crisis.

From the headline i assumed this was meaning that they were pushing him to kick all the Americans in RAF bases up and down the country out the moment the US launches an attack on Greenland.
Instead all its calling for is to rule out the attack actually originating from here… Christ.
For what its worth, if the US did attack Greenland, i’d want every American armed forces member ejected from the country that night. I suspect the same would happen across Europe.
SASColfer on
There’s no invasion to be had. Just turn up with the troops and it’s essentially yours. NATO and the European alliances are immediately destroyed but it’s not like there’s going to be fighting on the beaches.
I don’t think Denmark is going to put up a fight either, it would be absolutely pointless. The impact won’t be deaths but rather the complete annihilation of trust between the US and it’s past friends.
MilosEggs on
If the US attacks Greenland then every US service member in the UK needs to be removed. Along with any diplomats. Let alone using our bases

Starmer will next be seen hanging little stars and stripes flags on bases to welcome our guests.

The US isn’t going to attack Greenland. So why the fuck would Kier bother alienating and souring relations with Trump about a scenario that isn’t going to happen?
debauch3ry on
Obviously the UK would not tolerate an attack on NATO from its soil. However, before any of that happens we have to act as if we will continue to be allies.
Any *public* discussion from the PM himself on contingency plans could antagonise the gilded moron in chief. That includes public comments on ‘ruling out’ things.
wkavinsky on
This . . . shouldn’t even be in question as an option.
Greenland is part of Denmark, who are part of NATO.
If the US invades Greenland, we are bound by treaty to defend Greenland – which means we certainly won’t be basing any US forces in the country for the foreseeable future – and if we do, then we’re withdrawing from NATO in favour of being a US state, something which should certainly go to the electorate.

We should stop cooperating with the Dozy Don and the USA. Take over all Dozy Dons golf courses and put windmills and solar panels on them.

Don’t sell the UK’s soul. The PM needs to set out now what the position is and make it clear no ifs or buts. The UK can hold its own together with the rest of the allies. Who is after Greenland then?

This entire thing is asinine. Literally a fantasy perpetuated by people who are desperate for a Germans invading Poland moment for the USA so they can point and scream “HITLER!!!” at Donald Trump.
Greenland is not getting invaded, the US are literally already there, there is nothing really to “invade” as such. The whole point of Greenland is to have a legitimate claim to the entire North East section of the North American continent and to control the territorial waters associated with it. That doesn’t come with any imagined invasion it comes from the USA legally acquiring the territory in an indisputable fashion, either through a direct purchase from Denmark, or through a referendum and declaration by the citizens of Greenland.
This whole thing is a complete storm in a teacup perpetuated by people who just want to turn every country against the USA, and naturally this is just those people trying to get Starmer to publicly denounce the orange man and get on side. It’s absurd.
recursant on
Greenland is important to US national security. They want it and they can take it quite easily. If (or when) they do, there is nothing anybody can do to stop them.
But at that point the relationship between the US and Europe, including the UK, changes. Completely. They are no longer an ally. We can still trade with them, but we can no longer trust them or rely on them for anything. We should look at everything we currently rely on them for, and start finding alternatives.
Kind_Dream_610 on
Get the headline right. The US won’t attack Greenland, Trump will tell corrupt military leaders, who will order the gullible fools beneath them, to attack. Decent people in America don’t want this, but they’re too terrified to do anything to stop it themselves.
If Starmer does allow the UK to be used, then he should be tried as a war criminal for aiding it. And he should be prosecuted, along with Trump, for betraying the other NATO allies.

Trump probably is going to attack Greenland. There’s too much smoke from him.
It’s strategically placed geographically and is absolutely full of rare earth metals. The Yanks will be on it like a fly to shite.
I think the instant the US does it, we need to eject every single U.S. diplomat and soldier from the UK. They’ve just committed a hostile act against NATO, which we’re in.
The real issue is if they bluntly refuse to leave our bases. Which I think they might. Could get extremely nasty quickly.
