I still don’t get the collective punishment around legal shooters who have done nothing wrong
also a autistic criminal made a legit looking gun license , don’t think any more controls could have stopped that

I’d have to agree a backlog in renewals could potentially put the public at risk. New applications not so much as you need the certificate to purchase firearms.

A problem that could be solved by making gun ownership legal for anyone who’s not a felon or a fruitcake and over eighteen.

this sounds like it’s here to drum up anger on toffs who think they’re being attacked for hunting again
in reality, I think it’s understandable to have a 2000 case backlog when investigations (rightfully) involve; mental background check, criminal background check, interview, home visit and check of a person’s storage, something that would reasonable take 1-2 days at it’s shortest, per person?
and they should be that stringent.

The laws around firearms should be really strict.
I don’t even understand why so many farmers need them tbh we don’t have bears or wolves in England.
Is the fox population so large as to warrant them? And why not have specific hunters with licenses rather than giving them out to so many?

So then what’s the police solution? The same as the recent story about cutting corners on vetting officers, just wave through and hope for the best.
I’m not in one of those counties, but I renewed my license last year, they rang my reference, their conversation last 20 seconds. I’m for strong gun control and not sure I was renewed thoroughly.

It’s an absolute joke. People are submitting their licence renewals according to police guidelines, but the police aren’t processing them in time. What this means is that licences are expiring before the new one arrives, and it’s illegal to own guns without a valid licence. The police are effectively making people criminals because of this.

The entire discussion around legal use of firearms and also things like say, swiss army knives and multitools is mental at the moment.
Most of the serious weapons cases you read about are things like gang members that have managed to get a pistol (completely illegal since Dunblane for any licensed shooter), kitchen knives stashed in a puffer jacket, machetes, that sort of thing. Basically so far outside of the legal constraints that it’s like doing 100mph in a 20 zone.
Meanwhile well adjusted normal people are finding it an absolute pain in the arse to do things like target shooting and pest control. If you’re a country boy with a Leatherman on your belt you basically constantly exist in a state of semi-criminalization despite having about 100 better ways to cause damage if you actually wanted to.
It feels similar to the whole drunk driving thing – on the whole generally people who have had 1.5 pints are not causing issues, it’s people who have no forward planning slamming 4, 6, 8 and getting so smashed that they cycle around to being confident and thinking “sod it, I drive home”.
