Didn’t the the civil service have to start 3 days back in the office recently?

The ESB (also a semi-state) are moving from 1 to 2 days a week.

Is this coming from the government?

    >Under the plans, it’s understood some staff currently working primarily remotely may have to attend Enterprise Ireland’s Dublin office instead of one of the company’s nine regional offices.

That seems like a particular fuck you to staff.

COVID was a long time ago. The office is a good collaborative environment and can see why employers are changing their stance on this particularly if remote working isn’t guaranteed in the contract.

Many of us are finding that remote working lacks the allure it once did and being in the office has its benefits particularly for people in the team who are more junior.

If someone isn’t performing from home/remotely that’s down to bad management not the concept of remote working

  4. Looks like Enterprise Ireland middle management still can’t think of anything useful to do in 2026.

Nothing stinks of middle management busy work like a RTO policy. Either that or it’s a form of constructive dismissal. They know it’s an easy way to get some percentage of staff to quit.

Such a shame because remote work would really help reduce the demand on housing in Dublin if people knew they could move to other parts of Ireland without fear of their bosses demanding them to come to the office

Problem with WFH (and surely everyone has experienced this) is that you get some members of the team that will absolutely take the piss, and basically ruin it for everyone else

And it’s so hard to sack people these days that HR dept. are likely going RTO route instead to get around it

That’s what happened to us anyway. I’m more raging that they didn’t just sack the slackers and leave us be

Enterprise Ireland’s head office is based in the East Point Business Park, Dublin 3. So this will serve to needlessly force more people into awful Dublin commutes.

As a country we use to be ambitious, electricity infrastructure rollout for instance. We could have a national remote working strategy done really fast, give employees a real right to work from home where practical. We could have regional work hubs for companies to build out groups of workers.

It would solve so many problems with traffic, housing, rural decline, regional development. emigration and brain drain. We could become a world leading tech hub, we could be reporting some of the best work/life balance stats without loss of productivity.

What drives me fucking mental is being dragged into the nearly empty office to join zoom calls for the day, what’s the point.

Dublin traffic is a chaos and government bodies making it worse. Why?

If the government is unable solve infrastructure issues they should at least not make it worse.

Working from home a few days a week sounds like heaven. I get 1 day but because of meetings etc, I normally don’t get the chance to take it.

I don’t see what’s controversial with two days a week in an office environment. I know that’s unpopular with some.of you but I think WFH five days a week is unhealthy, especially for younger staff.

I think a lot of large companies are looking to reverse work from home. I know an American company who is looking at potentially expanding offices in Dublin and get people to go in more daily. It is a bit wild because I know a few people working in it and their teams are usually in America and India and they accomplish the exact same job from home as they do in the office

Forcing people to move from regional to Dublin says to me they’re trying to get people to quit.

They obviously want to downsize without paying redundancies.

With the current housing crisis the government have created they need to do more in terms of WFH. Many working professionals in Dublin are unable to afford to buy a house in Dublin and are being forced to buy elsewhere outside of Dublin. So they are now being forced to get a new job or travel multiple hours a week into the office….and for what? Productivity in these companies has not dropped and has either stayed the same or increased since WFH was introduced

Personally I get less done when in the office as it’s just a ton of meetings or small chat with people dropping by the desk all the time. I’m much more productive at home

After working remote for 4 years, I am losing my job in March because of this RTO shit.

Coincidentally, my replacement in India is currently being trained.

Must be hard for EI to insist their clients put their best foot forward and network, have strategy meetings, get an office etc and then say it doesn’t apply to themselves though.

Recently my kids had a remote work from home day for school during a building closure… if you ever want to find out if young people can learn as well remotely as in person, spend a day observing a young person work from home and compare & contrast that to in person.

Don’t get me wrong, some mature people can preform as well or better, but over all learning and outcomes are worse, but you save the commute.

The in the office lot whinging this is needed as they have to come into the office four days. Fucking organise yourselves into a union and get WFH like er do. Private sector finance bros earning big bucks whinging . Where is the solidarity?

  19. Confident_Reporter14 on

The State does not care about either the congestion or housing crisis. If they did, remote working would be encouraged more. It’s not for productivity reasons either, because there’s *no* evidence of greater productivity in-office.

From what I hear this decision came after several staff consultations showed strong resistance and also without any consultation of the Union. We really should be telling our elected officials exactly what we think of their total and reckless disregard for the day to day struggles of the average citizen.

  20. Commuting is already a pressure cooker at its limit. So many accidents on the roads. This is exactly what is needed…
