US President Donald Trump has been talking about Greenland for a long time, but it wasn’t until he attacked Venezuela that things really got serious.
Denmark’s Prime Minister, Mette Frederiksen , has said that if the NATO country the USA attacks Greenland , and thus also the NATO country Denmark, then “everything stops”.
Representative of the Storting and member of the Energy and Environment Committee in the Storting, Frøya Skjold Sjursæther (MDG), is clear in her speech:
– After Trump began to seriously threaten to attack another NATO country, NATO has never been weaker. The need to have more legs to stand on is greater than ever, and the EU is our best option.
– The last thing Norway needs now
Sjursæther believes it is completely incomprehensible that a majority of Norwegian parties are still against the EU, especially after the last few weeks .
Now she believes that there is an urgent need for a new EU debate in Norway, and that the rest of the left must take a real stand with its EU policy.
– The left-wing EU no is a slap in the face to the Trump administration, and my impression is that the no parties have not taken the new world order into their own hands. This also applies to Frp and KrF.
To this, the representative of the Norwegian Parliament and leader of the Progress Party’s Youth, Simen Velle, responds as follows:
– The last thing Norway needs now is a harrowing EU debate. Now Norway must ensure a good relationship both with the EU and with all other allies.
State Secretary Astrid Bergmål of the Labor Party believes that it is not time for a new membership process now.
– At the same time, it is important to discuss how we best safeguard Norwegian interests and Norwegian security, especially in the time we are now living in with major geopolitical changes. Norway’s relationship with the EU and Europe is a natural part of this, writes Bergmål in an email to VG.
Defense policy spokesperson for KrF, Jonas Andersen Sayed, believes that the new world order confirms Norway’s need to strengthen NATO cooperation by equipping our own defense.
– An EU debate is just a derailment from where the focus should be, he writes in an SMS to VG.
– It is very naive to believe that the EU will replace the function of NATO. Our most important ally in Europe is the United Kingdom, which is also not part of the EU, and there is no basis today to believe that NATO will be dissolved, says Sayed.
Believes the yes parties have given Trump a power grab
Defense policy spokesperson for the Reds, Bjørnar Moxnes, goes straight for Sjursæther’s throat:
– Sjursæther’s MDG, like the EU-enthusiastic parties Høyre and Venstre, has given Trump the keys to 12 military bases on Norwegian soil, he writes in an email to VG.
Moxnes believes it is giving Trump a power grab over Norway, because he gets military bases behind our own defense lines.
– I therefore do not think that an accusation from MDG of “not embracing the new world order” has libelous force, he writes.
Sjursæther responds that if Rødt believes that Norway should be less dependent on the US, then the EU is their best option.
Moxnes questions whether Norwegian EU membership would have any deterrent effect on the United States, when Denmark’s EU membership does not appear to have had any deterrent effect.
– The EU is not a military alliance, the EU has no command structure and the EU has no forces of its own.
EU policy spokesperson for SV, Ingrid Fiskaa, believes that EU membership is not a solution to the problems Norway faces.

The beginning of 2026 has been very demanding, and I believe we are facing a challenging political year, she writes in an email.
In times characterized by unrest and unpredictability, Søreide believes that it is necessary for Norway to be part of alliances and partnerships.
She writes that NATO is our security guarantee, and that cooperation with the EU – on everything from security and preparedness to exports, migration and welfare – is becoming increasingly important for Norway.
– US military capacity completely surpasses
Professor of Political Science at the University of Oslo, Dag Harald Claes, says that the EU is nowhere near being a military alliance on par with NATO.
Despite the fact that security policy work in the EU is developing rapidly, Claes believes that it will take many years before the EU can stand on its own two feet militarily, if it ever happens.
– As long as it is possible to maintain NATO cooperation, that should be the main strategy, says Claes.
Most EU countries are members of NATO, but the US military capacity completely surpasses that of all other NATO countries.
It is only if NATO disintegrates that it makes security policy sense for Norway to join the EU, he believes.
– This does not mean that there cannot be other reasons, both political and economic, that speak in favor of EU membership.
Personally I would welcome them into the EU with open arms. But a good majority of Norwegians need to want it (+70%). If it’s a very close tie then it’ll be a divisive issue domestically and EU integration will not be smooth.
With US officially going crazy and burning every bridge with Europe, NATO alliance in its worst phase as NATO members direct threatened other NATO members and “allies” with military invasion, with Russia continues its ongoing provocative moves in Svalbard Archipelago and China trying to gain influence in Arctic, drives many Norwegians started reconsider their stance in EU membership as more and more politicians and experts turn in favour of joining EU in comparison to the past.
Recent polls shows that mostly younger population want EU membership while older and the rural population is mostly against. There gonna be published a new poll after all this “Greenland possible invasion” and the results gonna be interesting for both Iceland and Norway.
She is from the pro-EU green party.
It doesnt really matter as the general population is still mostly against EU membership and even the parties that are pro-EU in principle dont want to risk a referendum where it might be 30 years until the next time.
There is already a good UK + Nordic + Baltic defence cooperation that we can build on.
EU would make Norway lose all it’s significance
I would welcome Norway like I would welcome someone bringing me one of the last missing pieces of a jigsaw puzzle.
They would really tie the place together.
And I’ve forgiven you for raiding us (Ireland) in 795 – 1050. But we want our stuff back, ok?
Hopefully we’ll join some day. Many people are skeptical due to misinformation. With the current security situation and a untrustworthy USA, opinions may change faster
We should have more young politicians. How can a 70 years old really think 50 years in the future when planning policies?
Norwegians think they’re too good for the EU unfortunately
Same user who constantly makes posts about Norway and various other countries to integrate into EU / Euro etc.
[Some threads even get removed by mods](https://www.reddit.com/r/europe/comments/1q2rl1f/a_united_states_of_europe_isnt_idealism_its/)
[Pointed this out in another post of theirs.](https://www.reddit.com/r/europe/comments/1q3kfhr/expert_swings_thinks_sweden_should_change/nxlgqlc/) Getting tiring,
Since it’s basically propaganda. Norwegians don’t want to join the EU. Sweden don’t want to join the Euro. etc etc.
