A serving garda carried out a protracted, alcohol fuelled assault on his wife: hitting her, dragging her by the hair, terrifying her in a locked bedroom while she begged him to stop. She feared she would be killed and ended the marriage the next day. Thirteen years later, he walks free with a fully suspended sentence. That outcome sends a devastating message to victims of domestic violence.

The judge had to entertain the possibility that he may one day be very handy at the gaa

At what point do we start protesting all these fucking suspended sentences…

I’m actually feeling worried for the good people of this country that they are letting people walk out after day?!???

The only good part of this story was the fact that she left the cunt immediately. How he got away with this sentence escapes me

I’m always amazed that nobody goes vigilante in these type of cases i.e. when you know the system will let them off.

She’s dead fucking right. The absolute state of the judicial and political system in this country. A genuine disgrace.

Much like housing, this is just another result of the absolute lack of action from FF/FG governments for the past decade. Been crying out for another prison to be built to combat the overcrowding, which is why there’s so many suspended sentences being handed down because the prison service is overran

Judges are reluctant to give custodial sentences to Gardaí (and Prison Officers), the argument being that the prison experience will be worse for them than “regular people”, as they’ll be surrounded by criminals that inherently don’t like them.

But it’s a fucking stupid argument because they’re being sentenced because they’re fucking criminals, not upstanding Gardaí that deserve some kind of special treatment. The law should apply equally to all, even if the effects of the law are not equal – that’s on them for committing crimes while they’re supposed to be upholding the law.
