This is why I genuinely believe Ireland really needs to start investing in our defense. We keep expecting Britain and America to do the bare minimum like patrol our own seas when a Russian sub rocks up.
The world is changing and we don’t need a big military but we should be able to defend our own borders

Weirdly if Trump is threatening tariffs again for countries not agreeing to give him Greenland, that tells me he’s already backing down. That he’s doesn’t have the nerve to make this a shooting match, had assumed Denmark would just turn over, and we’re already seeing TACO play out. Might be my wishful thinking, mind.

We economically collapsed and for all the issues with how it was done the EU did bail us out when we needed help. To me a EU member needing help when its territory is threatened should be no different. The EU is about solidarity with other members so of course it should draw a line with Greenland.
Honestly as a show of solidarity with Greenland I think we should send a token like flying over 1 of the new C295 marinate patrol aircraft or 1 of the Beckett class ships to join the *Excercise* Arctic Endurance which the whole point of is to show the US that the EU is unified in solidarity with Greenland and Denmark.
Obviously we Ireland are not going to fight the US, we lack any capability to but sending over a ship or aircraft in solidarity is the right thing to do now IMO

It’s utterly insane that it’s gone this far but I suspect that he’ll be put back into his box by Congress, eventually. There are moves afoot, even from GOP senators to ensure he doesn’t have the powers to do this.
If they fail to contain him and he ignores Congress, the US itself is basically screwed, as it would mean absolute executive power and basically full electoral authocracy, like what you see in a lot of notoriously unstable countries where they flip from one strongman leader to the next.

If the E.U doesn’t wade in on this with Denmark, then it’ll collapse. If we don’t retaliate then what would stop Putin taking more than Ukraine? Trump taking Iceland and Ireland for a strategic outposts against the U.K. and Europe could be his next play if he gets away with it. For decades Europe has been perfectly happy to sit back and outsource international peace and security to the US, because it was in our collective interest and benefit to do so. European countries cut defence spending massively and downsized our militaries, and now suddenly we’re scrambling to try and react to two belligerent powers on our flanks.
Europe is weak, and it seriously needs to get its act together if it wants to remain a serious entity into this century. There’s no choice here but to support Greenland/Denmark because if not then, then tomorrow it’ll be someone else like the Baltics, Romania, Poland, Finland, Iceland and so on.

It’s less EU and more about NATO. Canada has signalled it’s loosing faith in its US alliance too. Trump is threatening tariffs for non compliance, however if NATO members started dumping US treasury bonds, it would be a debt bomb for the USA..

Any invasion or takeover won’t happen, the consequences for America globally would be catastrophic. One example being that immediately all American soldiers based in Europe will be escorted off their bases and into civilian planes and sent home. All equipment, tanks, jets etc will be left behind. And a plethora of other implications
