When i was a little girl my mother would get upset if I didn’t wear shoes. Now I’m talking about being in the front garden on a hot sunny day, but it was a real trigger for her. She said people would think we were poor, I thought she was bonkers. My mother grew up in a rough part of Liverpool in the 1930s and tragically like the kids in this photo not everyone could afford shoes. I see photos like this and it’s hard to imagine the poverty

Being from belfast, I wonder if anyone complained about all the money spent on fancy ships while kids lived like this?
