The thug of the headline who battered a man is the same man who was attacking the woman.

It’s not saying a thug interrupted an attack on a woman and battered the person who was attacking a woman.

To me, their headline infers that a “known local thug” found a woman being assaulted and (counter to type) saved her by battering the assaulter.
