Starting the year off with banning VPNs. Many predicted this and its here.
That’s insane…
Coming soon to EU. Totally not totalitarian BS /s
And now we get to the *actual* reason for the porn restrictions.
It was always about finding an excuse to ban VPNs.
Am I reading the article right, labour doesn’t actually support this policy. I was passed in the house of lords, but the House of Commons is probably gonna reject the measure
It’s the House of Lords (average age >75).
The Commons will just ignore them, as per usual.
Unless some other motivation captures their attention.
Not sure they can actually do that given VPN are also used to protect people from data breaches or scams there was something on black belt barrister YouTube mentioning about the consequences of such a ban
@ UK government… Good luck with that! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣😂🤣😂

BTW, only a handful of companies control most of the VPNs. Those who believe they are disguised or protected using them are nuts.
Just for those who do t understand how the UK legislature works. This will go nowhere. While the lord’s has done level of power and influence it ultimately can’t either stop or force legislation through. It’s meant to exist as a check/balance rather than as an actual legislative body.
The Lord’s can propose a d vote in whatever it likes, if the Government and the Commons isn’t keen on it it goes nowhere. And while Individual government ministers have floated the idea of VPN restrictions they have always and repeatedly been slapped down by the government itself, which repeatedly says it’s not interested in touching them
Which very much tracks with the way the OSA is actually set up. A collection of clever bits of regulation the government doesn’t trust the general public to understand hiding behind a frankly useless site side age verification system, fobbed off on the websites and Ofcom to avoid any effort from government, that looks and sounds good to the sort of tech illiterate voter (which is most of them) who demands the government “do something” and then pretends like all the actually effective things being done aren’t happening because they dont understand it. The government is not going to tack a complicated and potentially economy harming VPN restriction that will piss of every major business when the whole point of the verification part is that it’s hassle free red meat for the tech illiterate.
You can’t ban VPN’s, too many businesses rely on them to interconnect different sites, and technologically it’s not feasible.
You could block the websites of consumer VPN providers I guess, but you just push people into using shadier, less mainstream solutions.
You couldn’t block people from, for example, running a VPS based in a different country with wireguard slapped on top.
Totally agree, using a VPS for WireGuard is a solid workaround! For diverse locations, especially outside mainstream regions for better geo-flexibility, Lightnode offers some great options.
at the most important time in 21st century, this government is making the worst decisions. Fuck those “lords”
It’s technically impossible to block VPN’s without blocking other country’s entirely.
That is the length the British Government will have to go to, in order to stop it’s Citizens from accessing VPN services.
As long as there is a single country in the entire world who sell’s VPN services that is not in the UK, this will/and can never be/technically tracked, at any level.
I own and operate an email service provider in the United Kingdom, I know – deeply – how the internet is designed to work.
It is not technically enforcable at any level and in any reality, the ability to block Virtual Private Networks or their providers.
If the Chinese cannot block VPN’s (They cannot) We cannot.
The Internet is designed to be unblockable. While there is a single open packet stream to ANY OTHER COUNTRY on earth from the United Kingdom that is public, you will not be able to block VPN’s.
End of story.
“Think of the children!”…
Huh, it’s not even forbidden to use vpn in Russia(just most of them are blocked, but still not forbidden). What’s going on?
If they implement this, I foresee Mullvad getting a lot more anonymous cash envelopes!
Authoritarian ghouls
Why oh why does the UK still have an unelected chamber of parliament? It’s feudalism in the modern age, not democracy.
