It seems Russia has made the kind of concessions that would really apppeal to Trump and his money men, like control over and profits from frozen Russian assets. They also seem to have resigned themselves to accepting some security guarantees and US/European prescence in post-war Ukraine.
I still believe that we’ll see an end to this war later this year. Between the constant drone strikes on Russian refineries, allies seizing shadow fleet tankers, China calling in their debts and the liquidation of their gold reserves to pay for spending, Putin’s cabinet probably understand that they can’t hold out much longer before they lose much of the power and leverage they still have.

At what point can we just freeze out the US from these discussions entirely? France is now providing the intelligence, Europe as a whole is providing the funding and munitions, the US is becoming increasingly irrelevant in this other than muddying the waters and strengthening Russia’s hand. Only factor I can think of is Starlink, but I don’t think Musk, as much of an irrational scumbag as he is, is irrational enough to turn off Starkink if Europe threatened sweeping retaliatory sanctions in such a scenario.

So they are just demanding what they can’t achieve with military. Sure, we can say that it is war of attrition and at some point they may be able to get it. But the cost will be much higher.
Not agreeing on current frontline without making any other concessions may cost way more in future (edit: for russia). So they are just betting that Ukraine will collapse in future, therefore the terrorist daily strikes on civilians.

There has to be a cost to Russia greater than the cost to Ukraine. Russia will not frame this peace as a victory against Ukraine, it will be declared a victory against the West.

I think Russia should end the war by giving up a 10 mile line within their border with the rest of Europe as a “no man’s land” that becomes carpeted with mines and has walls built on both sides with orders for this side to immediately arrest and return by force anyone who crosses.
