Una domanda controfattuale: Chiavenna, Valtellina e Bormio erano dipendenze delle Tre Leghe (gli attuali Grigioni) fino al 1797. Confini a parte, quale sarebbe la differenza più grande per la Svizzera/società svizzera nel 2026 se fossero state assorbite nella Confederazione?

I don’t think it would have changed that much. The population of Valtellina, Bormio and Val Chiavenna was very low but the region had significant strategic value.
Switzerland would have ~180,000 more Italian speakers, but Italian would still be the third national language, with the only difference that instead of ONE single canton only speaking Italian, there would be 2/3.
The Sonderbund war and the reformation post 1848 wouldn’t change much with so little Italian speakers.
The GDP per capita in the area would be low, there would be more Catholics at the national level, and the region would be great as a tourist attraction, but little would have changed at the national level, as I see it.
(I’m an irredentist, those lands will one day be Swiss again, I hope🇨🇭♥️)
I doubt this would have changed much at all. Not very relevant for our economy. Maybe the biggest change would be for the people living there, so you got to ask them.
It would have reshaped the Swiss map for sure. Aside from some diplomatic turmoil, our Italian speaking friends would have had a little more language support in national debates, probably without needle moving impact though.
I’m certain Switzerland would have some more postcard sceneries and the Glacier Express wouldn’t cross the border (but I may be mistaken there, was never strong in Geography).
Other comments mentioned very interesting insights. One other thing that may be worth thinking about: Would Romansh still be a “language” (and an official one), with 200k more Italian speakers in GR?
Probably they would be even less important than now, look at Tre Valli region or Brevaglia and Poschiavo which get super low financial aids and are completely irrelevant and are unluckily getting ghost valleys good just for a Saturday hike.
The only good thing I can think of is that maybe Falck environmental disaster linked to the big industrialization of Lombardy would have not happened 🥲
