I can’t help but feel there are more cases like this that haven’t been reported.

And there are still people saying police should be less accountable for their actions

    >Montgomery, who had falsified witness statements from a man and a woman, was jailed for nine months while Beggs received an eight month sentence.

Those sentences seem very low for such a serious crime.

My missus used to work at a petrol station in the eighties and one night there was a drive off and she clocked the reg and reported it. Next day the coppers came round and told her manager that she was mistaken/lying as the person with that car was a policemans son and would never do anything like that. My missus stuck to her guns and shortly after a guy came in out of uniform and said to her that coppers have got big ears and to watch out.

These cases lead to a corrosion of trust in society, I think they got off lightly with that sentencing.

People rightly should be questioning past convictions they were involved in.

Absolutely horrible. I can’t fathom why any cop would do this – whatever steps they took to manufacture or conceal evidence would undoubtedly have been more effort and stress than just investigating the offence (if there even was one) properly. In this day and age where everything is audited and scrutinised, getting away with something like this is not unlike trying to get away with murder. Good riddance to these two.
