The very idea of the triple lock is just ridiculous, and totally redundant in today’s multipolar world. The only people who should ever have a say in when and where Irish troops are deployed are we ourselves.

Yes they did that and yes it’s just as silly as it sounds.
Not only did they do that but PBP and Soc Dems did the same.
Im pretty sure Soc Dems lost a lot of support amongst their base because they assumed their voters didn’t understand how the triple lock and the UN bodies actually work in practice.

I should note i lean centre left and am frustrated with pretty much every party flip flopping with hypocrisy evrry two minutes. I could write an entire encyclopedia on the shortcomings of FF and FG but its no wonder the alternative parties don’t get the votes when they assume their voters are too stupid/emotional to read into their conflations and half truths.
They have to be so much better than FF and FG. I’m not saying that it is fair but they’re competing with legacy parties in a country where politics is largely based on historical family ties.
This pretty much proves the warmongering to be true, the government want to be able to send our forces to war with no oversight and even according to the article they want to be able to sent 50 abroad with even a dail vote.
You have to ask WHY why would we want this what ambitions have the government got in mind that they so badly want missions abroad whenever they’re feeling like it.
In this current world of privacy and rights crackdowns more military actions is the last thing we’ll want as citizens. Especially with out close ties to America, what happens if king trump demand we go on a few missions for him or he’ll hit us hard in the economy. Seeing as even with all the murders by ice the st Patricks day visit is going ahead anyway. This will put the Irish military in the hands the US or the highest bidder mark my words.

It looks like the Government (led by an increasingly autocratic Micheál Martin) are refusing to entertain any level of additional oversight for deployment of Irish troops abroad.
The Oireachtas Defense Committee proposed that we should at least have a formal legal review, but it looks like this has been dismissed out of hand by the Government –Â
“One source said this would be ‘getting rid of one triple lock and replacing it with another’.”
So taking the argument against the current triple-lock in good faith (that the UN Security Council vetos mean no troops will be ever deployed again), what reason could the current Government have for not wanting more oversight by our elected officials for something as serious as foreign troop deployment?
This shows that this whole thing has nothing to do with what’s best for the Irish people, the country or our democracy but is a cynical way for the Government to gain more control because they believe they know better than the rest of us.Â
EDIT: The war hawks and COD fetishisers here can downvote all they want but they can’t give a single good reason why the Dáil shouldn’t have more oversight for overseas troop deployment.

I have no idea why the opposition parties are wasting political capital on this. I’ve never met anyone who understands what the triple lock is who supports it. The comments in this thread opposing ending the triple lock perfectly demonstrate this. It makes 0 sense that these parties want the US, Russia, China, France and the UK to have a veto over over our troop deployments. Sinn Féin in particular wanting the UK to have a say in our troop deployments is especially baffling.
