No need to ‘dream’, just continue on the path that Europe is already on and independence will inevitably be the result. It’s not reality yet, but it will be in not so distant future.

Rutte needs to say these things I guess, even if he’s been overdoing the sycophancy routine for “daddy” Trump a bit. Oh well, as long as it buys Europe the time that it needs I couldn’t care less.

  2. IndubitablyNerdy on

In the short term he is correct, although he could have said it differently and with less sycophancy toward trump especially given what the latter thinks about NATO and its role.

Hopefully we will eventually be able to decouple enough in time though, especially if we turn all the recent ‘realizations’ into action, but this is going to take years, if not decades, we should have started working on more strategic independence during Trump first mandate, or even earlier, perhaps during the annexation of Crimea or during the arab spring, but alas…

  3. Mr_strelac on

Europe should not dream about anything, but start rolling up its sleeves and taking action to solve problems.

and as long as people like him and a few other Europeans are in high positions, who only talk, Europe will never get to the point where anyone takes it seriously.

  4. Boring-Leg-1449 on

Rutte has been very sloopy in his communication. He should be removed ASAP

We have nukes, carriers and a decent enough army that the USA certainly won’t invade unless they are ready to pay a horrible blood price. I’m pretty sure the USA won’t move a finger if we start a real war with Russia, too. So, what’s left ? The USA can destroy the world 150 times, we can only do it 5 but spoiler, once is enough.

    >!Definitely not what she said!<

  6. joecool78257 on

I’m guessing he was referring to nuclear defense and deterrence. The Europeans can fight, no doubt about that. Poo Poo does NOT want a conventional fight with Europe.

  7. ThePlasticSturgeons on

The kissing of the ring (ass) of the current occupant of the White House is a sure path toward being steam rolled by US policy. The EU should be acting as if they’re dealing with Putin when dealing with Trump because the reality is that they’re basically the same person, however Trump remains (for now) somewhat constrained by the US Constitution.

honestly the phrasing just sounds like reverse-psychology encouraging, so keep yapping

It is time for Rute to go away… He looks like american and not european.

  10. RetroGradeReturn on

This is exactly what Rutte needs to do, it buys us time. He knows this, Stoltenberg knew this too. As degrading as this is for him, Europe is not strong enough to have an adversary like the US yet.

    >Without U.S. support, European nations would be required to massively ramp up their defense spending to 10% of their GDP. NATO allies pledged to spend 5% of their GDP on defense last year on defense by 2035. Likewise, Europe would be forced to spend billions of dollars to create a new nuclear deterrent, absent the U.S.

    >”In that scenario, you will lose the ultimate guarantor of our freedom, which is the U.S. nuclear umbrella. So hey, good luck,” Rutte said.

We’re all riding a big wave of national pride and righteous indignation.

Rutte is a slimy fucker, but what exactly is he or Zelensky for that matter wrong about, ffs we’re not even able to help Ukrain four years after the russian began fucking them over.

It will take sacrifice and commitment to gain our independence.

Pretending we can win with speeches and pride alone is like pissing yourself to stay warm, it only works for a second and then they call HR, again.

It’s his actual job to spit crap like this. Remember, there’s a rotten orange turd across the pond. Right now that orange blob is his only friend, his best friend. Probably his bestet friend ever.

    Until it isn’t.

  13. Uwibamie on

I can’t tell if he’s playing 5d chess with us, forcing us to actually build up our capabilities, or if he’s just a big pro-US guy. I am hoping it’s the former.

This administration is the reason I don’t believe in natural selection because it’s amazing they’re honestly still alive. It’s like they don’t understand the point of all this was WE help each other, literally the easiest thing to comprehend, it’s what we learn in 2nd grade. Instead they just look at dollars and think everything is a business, good thing all these guys ran failing businesses smh what a joke

  15. Gruffleson on

It might be the tacical smart thing to say, if he wants politicians to actually agreeing on an alternative.

  16. OsgrobioPrubeta on

We have Rutte licking Trump’s a.. then we have a significant bunch of redditors licking Rutte’s a.. .

Not surprising since many times a person looks at Europe sub and to Conservatives sub and realizes that many users would do fine on any of them.

  17. Slutty_Alt526633 on

I can’t wait until 🇺🇲 we stop being a world fucking superpower. I’m tired, boss.

  18. NewTurnover5485 on

Every time I hear we need US security, I ask myself “security from what?”.
The answer inevitably comes: “from what the US would do to you if you would not be dependent on it’s security”.

  19. Userwerd on

His job is to keep NATO whole, if it means hyperbolizing to entertain the ego of a certain member so be it.

  20. Rutte is a worm, but he is our worm. You should not take take him literally.

He has no spine. He knows how to crawl on all fours. He calls Trump a daddy and that is what Trump likes to hear.

Meanwhile we can do our best to stand up. He buys us time.

  21. JuliusCaesar121 on

Europe is funny. Either Europe does or doesn’t need the us security umbrella. This is a question of fact, not emotion or morality.

Whatever rutte says is completely irrelevant.

    This seems extremely stupid

  22. Minimum_Jackfruit821 on

I mean, I understand that he wants to keep NATO together, but these were poorly chosen words.

  23. First-Wolf-398 on

Rusia can’t win a war against Ukraine in more than 4 years. And Ukraine is not France, or the UK, with all my respect to brave Ucranians. Russia almost lost when part of the Russian army marched to Moscow two years ago. If Europe went to war against Russia, Putin wouldn’t last a week. So, no, Rutte, WE are Not afraid of Russia.

  24. BlueHeartbeat on

Cue the usual breakdancing in the comments to explain how anything Rutte says is actually brilliant.

  25. zwd_2011 on

Easy now. It’s just a way to get the members to spend more faster.

  26. Nordalin on

I wonder how many of the butthurt people actually know the rest of his statement, because he actually elaborated on it.

  27. HalLundy on

rutte is so bad at this point i think iohannis would’ve done a better job.

granted, he’d always be away on holiday in private jets. but at least he’d shut up.

  28. Maptwopointoh on

Pretty sure he will find a way to say that his words were misunderstood and misquoted and he actually meant something else.
