Ciao a tutti! Grazie in anticipo!!
Cordiali saluti, un americano innamorato, che non parla tedesco.

My mom makes this cake all the time. I don’t have her recipe but I know that hers is not spongy but more with a crisp base (which gets softer and soggy from the strawberry after a day or so) and I really like that and would dislike a spongy version. I would therefore probably disagree on the eggs in the recipe you shared.
I can ask for my mom’s recipe if you would like.
The authentic – really authentic – way of preparing this cake is
1. Buying a premade Totenboden
2. Putting halves of strawberries on it
3. Preparing premade Dr. Oetker Tortenguss with nothing added than water and puring it over it.
Be done.
But your recipe looks good, too.
Most people I know just use a storebought sponge base for this. Put the halved strawberries on top, cover in gelatin, serve.
Some people put vanilla pudding under the strawberries, but this is less common.
The recipe looks fine – probably not 100% the cake you would get/make in Germany but the basic ingredients are there, the texture of the base layer might be slightly different especially compared to the widely available pre made ones here but it would be similar to a self made one for sure.
And you definitely don’t need the pudding base from your other recipe you found, that’s a completely different cake 😉
