I’d like to know where this comes from (it’s common to other countries). The costumes are a little different, but I think the intention or history is the same. I also saw it in the Dominican Republic, where they “whip” people with an inflated bladder tied to a rope. It’s a 100% real animal bladder.
I don’t know what it’s about, but they managed to “whip” me once, and I had a huge bruise on my leg for three days.

Go to the Black Forest, and you will find those everywhere, also lots of witches and the like. A quick Google image search for “alemannische Fasnet”, and you get the idea.
