Public: “but what about if an authoritarian will get into power”
Gov: “Don’t worry about that, you can trust us now and in the future”

Worryingly UK governments of multiple stripes have had the same mindset and it was a major theme regarding Blair’s original attempt to get Digital ID in place. “You might not be evil” (this is very much in debate, but that’s a whole different thread) “but what about ….” and again the answer from Blair etc was “you can trust us”
