I wonder if there is any legislation that the government has implemented in recent years that has actually increased supply

Don’t worry Simon Harris is “on the side of renters”

Notice of termination. Eviction different process. But hey makes the headline sound more dramatic.

“Local TDs have criticised Housing Minister and Wexford TD James Browne due to the evictions were taking place in his “backyard”, with meetings planned in the coming days to help residents.

According to the notice – seen by The Journal – tenants in the Hazelwood estate in Bridgetown have until August to vacate.

The homes are owned by Wexford-based firm Patchflow Ltd. They have been contacted for comment but had not replied by time of publication. The notice said the landlord intends to sell the properties.”

Huh I wonder if it’s to do with the new rules that start from march 1st? A company holding rents will have far less reasons to terminate tenancy/evict…

What are the new rules? Swing lots of conflicting information from it will hurt landlords to it will attract landlords.

And so it begins. So sorry for these people.

Micheal & Co – treat the housing crisis like it was Covid, and get things done FAST. The amount of Government inertia on housing for years has been ridiculous. Housing is a human right. Housing should be the number one priority, as everything else falls from it – ability of people to stay safe, clean, warm, get a job, link in with services, mental wellbeing, budget.

As the article says, it looks to be an illegal eviction and is unlikely to proceed

“However, the Department of Housing has said that legislation offers protection to renters, as it pointed to the ‘Tyrrelstown amendment’ contained within the Residential Tenancies Acts.

The department noted that where a “landlord proposes to sell 10 or more units within a single development at the same time, that sale is subject to the existing tenants remaining in situ, other than in exceptional circumstances”.”

I’m not sure why anyone is in shock. The gov created this mess and it was obvious this was going to happen. It was highlighted to the gov before they implemented it but sure they ploughed ahead with it anyway

At a minimum, should be required to give government advance notice of mass eviction, as companies are required to do for mass layoffs. Plus longer notice periods. Plus stronger tenancy rights. We need a constitutional right to housing and a major public housebuilding works programme, and we needed it a decade ago.
