Cyprus is an important humanitarian pitstop in the region so I highly doubt RAF Akrotiri would have been used, for that reason alone. Too many countries to fly over if they wanted to use it for that purpose. Whereas Diego Garcia is literally a straight path into Iran over ocean.

The UK has given the US access to use the Diego Garcia and RAF Fairford military bases, we understand.
The former is the largest island in the Chagos Islands, which have been the subject of scrutiny from Donald Trump in recent weeks.
RAF Fairford is in Gloucestershire, a few miles north of the town of Swindon.
