Nowadays, the fastest pace to overcome Visa and Mastercard is through all the European digital payment companies like Whero, Bizum and more, that are interconecting their services with each other. I hope one day they can release a debit card.

If the weekend’s events have shown anything, it’s that our decoupling from the US can’t come fast enough.

I suspect this is a blend of
* classic right-of-center defense of big business interests: in this case, banks, which do not want to see any digital euro passed under the form presented by the ECB and the Commission. So a defense of rent, which is inherently anti-liberal
* classic anti-europeanism from the far right, as usual amounting to a betrayal of the interests of the european citizen, butteressed by their new hard-on for the autoritharian regime being set up in Wahsington
* probably a full-on lobbying effort from Visa & Mastercard alongside the banks themselves, wihch might have swayed opinions also in this corner of the aisle.
In short, as usual, parliamentary democracy, hijacked by pressure groups, big money interests and subversion pseudo-patriotic types is unable to function as intended, meaning helping steer legislation towards the common interest of THE CITIZEN.
This is not only a European Parliament problem, but also a US congress problem, a Commons problem, an assemblée nationale problem…
This is a preview of what a far-right European commission/parliament would look like should they takeover in France and Germany. Nothing will work, everything at a standstill, the institution being corroded by those who claim their orders in Moscow or Washington.
