Buona giornata. Buona giornata. Grazie.

  1. Are those pictures from a surveillance camera?

Hope everyone filmed has consented to that.

Edit: Do the people downvoting the question realising that video surveillance of public spaces can get OP into hot water themselves?

As you already said, there’s nothing you can do. I guess you could sue them for this and that, but ultimately it’s easier to just move out.

    Why are people like this?

Why do they feel the need to be horrible fucking disgusting assholes?

You may want to join the Deutscher Mieterbund eV, memberships is quite cheap, and they will help to handle your problems with landlords. Good luck!

There is a Müllpolizei in germany, you should contact your local Mülldeponie.

Connect an AI to the camera that shouts a message each time someone dumps it next to the bin.

  7. How many households for those 2-3 little bins? Weekly emptying?

  8. Hi,

here is a short explanation of how situations like this are usually handled in Germany. The most important point is that the landlord must first be formally informed and given a chance to fix the problem.

If garbage is regularly left next to the bins and this leads to rats or hygiene problems, it can be considered a defect affecting the apartment or the building. In principle, the landlord is responsible for ensuring proper waste disposal and for maintaining hygienic conditions in the property.

However, there are several steps that should be followed before considering anything like rent reduction.

    1. Document the problem

Start by collecting evidence. This is very important if the issue later needs to be proven.

    You should:
    – take photos of the garbage next to the bins
    – take photos or note sightings of rats
    – write down dates and times when this happens
    – keep the documentation over several days or weeks if possible

This helps show that the problem is recurring and not just a single incident.

    2. Inform the landlord in writing

The landlord must be informed in writing (email or letter).
Describe the situation and ask the landlord to take action.

    Possible measures could include:
    – reminding tenants of proper waste disposal
    – warning tenants who violate the rules
    – arranging pest control
    – improving the waste management situation

The landlord should be given a reasonable deadline, usually around 10–14 days, to react.

    3. Keep documentation after the complaint

Even after informing the landlord, continue documenting the situation.
If the problem continues, this documentation becomes important.

    4. Rent reduction (“Mietminderung”)

In German tenancy law, rent reduction is sometimes possible if a serious defect affects the use of the apartment (for example due to hygiene problems or pest infestation).

However, this step should never be done without legal advice.

Rent reduction can be risky because:
    – if it is not legally justified, the landlord may claim rent arrears
    – this can even lead to termination of the tenancy

For this reason, it is strongly recommended to speak to a lawyer or a tenant protection association (Mieterverein) before reducing rent.

Usually the correct process would be:

    1. document the problem
    2. notify the landlord in writing
    3. give a deadline for fixing the problem
    4. warn that you may consider further steps if nothing changes
    5. consult a lawyer or tenant association before reducing rent

Often the issue is already resolved once the landlord receives a formal written complaint with documentation.

If nothing happens, the problem can also be reported to the local public order office (Ordnungsamt) or health department (Gesundheitsamt), especially if rats are involved.

    German (Letter to the tennant):

Betreff: Problem mit Müllentsorgung und Ratten bei den Mülltonnen

    Sehr geehrte/r [Name],

seit einiger Zeit wird im Bereich der Mülltonnen regelmäßig Müll neben den Tonnen abgestellt statt ordnungsgemäß entsorgt.

Dadurch entstehen zunehmend hygienische Probleme.

English (translation so you understand the meaning):

Subject: Problem with waste disposal and rats near the garbage bins

    Dear [Name],

for some time now, garbage has repeatedly been placed next to the bins instead of being disposed of properly.

This is increasingly creating hygienic problems. Rats have also been seen in the area around the garbage bins. This affects the quality of living in the building and may pose a health risk.

I therefore ask you to take appropriate measures so that garbage disposal is handled properly again and the problem is resolved.

Please let me know what steps you will take.

    Kind regards

There is something you can do. You can reduce the rent; that’s the only thing landlords like that understand. Get advice from a tenants’ association. A rent reduction of 10 to 20 percent is possible. Find a few allies in the building and then the landlord will take care of it as soon as he’s losing money

Where in Germany is this? It looks like an Erstaufnahmezentrum for refugees. (I worked in this field)

    there is multiple issues there:

    1. Seemingly your Landlord hasnt ordered enough bins or, if your neighbours arent living in the same house, the other houses havent orderered enough or right sized bins. Whatever the case is, the landlord with the garbage throwing tenants has to ensure there are enough bins present.

    2. this place seems like a dead end? Your landlord could fence the area off if possible, at least keeps people out that are not living there.

    3. those “dark” dead ends tend to become exactly that, big trash bins. it could use some beauty work by your landlord, a fence or hedge, some cleaning. This is not YOUR task btw, if not stated in your rent contract.

so to fin that up: if you cannot open your kitchen window to cook, we call that “(erheblicher) Mietmangel” and you should contact a local Mieterbund, the german Mieterbund or a lawyer for Mietrecht and try to force your landlord. In cooperation with a lawyer or similar professional by Mieterbund you can for example lower your rent or other measures so your landlord feels the urge to solve tthe problem. And if its not his problem a professional will find out whos problem it is and what to do and who to talk to solve this.

I attached a sign that says that the area of my window where the bicycles are placed is under video surveillance. There is no video illegality.
