You are wondering that a bank is doing what is in their best interest?
Welcome to the capitalist world.
>This means our dear state bank is siding with ped*philes and war criminals? 🙁
A somewhat unfair conclusion. The US has extrajudicial reach when it comes to the financial world. Even without direct business with the US, most bank will abide by US rules as they otherwise risk not being able to work with other partners who are under the US’s supervision.
Imagine Spuerkess having insisted on maintaining the accounts open and the US putting the Spuerkess onto a list of US sanctioned entities. Spuerkess’s clients would lose the ability to exchange USD, use credit cards (both Mastercard and Visa will have to observe US sanctions’ lists), etc.
That the Luxembourg government doesn’t intervene is also normal. Spuerkeess might be owned by the state, but the bank has independent governance (as it should). The government should have use this reminder to push for greater independence of European financial institutions at EU level.
