For those who don’t know Sachs he has been one of the most vocal Russia apologists in the West, framing their invasion as being the fault of NATO/US and opposing support for Ukraine.
He also spoke on Russia’s behalf at the UN in 2023. Why is our president meeting with him?

This is actually disgraceful.
Sachs has routinely whitewashed Russia’s crimes in Ukraine, and Assad’s crimes in Syria. He blames NATO for Russia invading Ukraine, and he has praised Victor Orban.
Connolly hasn’t particularly put a foot wrong since becoming President, but she can’t claim to be consistent on supporting self determination for everyone, and on human rights abuses, if she meets with people(that she doesn’t have to btw) that clearly aren’t.

Never heard of this fella so gave him a google, found the below from UCD:
“UCD is delighted to welcome world-renowned economics professor and global leader in sustainable development, Jeffrey Sachs, to campus.
He will speak as part of, Jeffrey Sachs: Education and Sustainable Futures – a student-led conversation, on Thursday, March 5th, 10am – 11am in Room LG.06, the auditorium of the new O’Connor Centre for Learning.
Known for his work in sustainable development, poverty reduction and international economic reform, Prof. Sachs is director of the Center for Sustainable Development at Columbia University. He previously led Columbia’s Earth Institute from 2002 to 2016 and spent over 20 years at Harvard University.
Prof. Sachs is a prominent advisor to the United Nations, serving as president of theUN Sustainable Development Solutions Network and an SDG advocate for Secretary-General António Guterres.
His bestselling books include The End of Poverty(2005), Common Wealth: Economics for a Crowded Planet (2008) and The Price of Civilisation (2011). The Economist magazine has ranked him among the world’s top three most influential living economists.
Prof. Sachs previously visited UCD when he was awarded the Ulysses Medal by the University in October 2016 for his outstanding global contributions to economic development, sustainability and fighting poverty. At the ceremony he emphasised the moral obligation to achieve the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
This time his presentation will be preceded by three short presentations by UCD students showcasing their work for sustainable development.
We look forward to seeing you there!”

So Connolly was lying on the campaign trail about her condemnation of Russia

I’m a big fan of what Sachs did around the Millennium Goals and latterly the SDGs. But he’s another person who’s conflated bluesky thinking with wrongheaded contrarianism. He doesn’t appear to recognise imperialist violence when it’s being done by countries other than the US, and his slide into conspiracy theories has been so disappointing to watch.

Not surprised to see this news.
David McCullough had him on this morning and didn’t let him off with his Kremlin talking points.
