Mi sono perso lo Sweden Finn Day del 24 febbraio, quindi è un po’ tardi.
Recentemente ho desiderato abbracciare ancora di più la cultura finlandese, perché il lato finlandese della famiglia è stato un mistero per tutta la mia vita poiché non se ne parlava molto a casa (argomento delicato). Mi sentivo un po’ combattuto tra la curiosità e l’evitarlo. Diviso tra due culture, cosa sono io?
In qualche modo voglio “rivendicare” questo, oggi non è più vergognoso come lo era negli anni ’70-’80.
Qualche anno fa ho chiesto alla nonna se si sentiva a suo agio nel parlare del lato finlandese della famiglia e lei ha detto di sì.
Ho saputo del suo viaggio in Svezia negli anni ’60, non parlava una parola di svedese ma era determinata! Non sapevo altro.
Mi ha mostrato le foto della strada in cui viveva, foto di vecchi membri della famiglia.
Era un mondo nuovo per me.
Da bambino chiedevo continuamente: “Come si dice questa frase in finlandese? Come si conta fino a 10?”.
Le ho mandato un messaggio oggi dicendo che sono orgoglioso del suo viaggio. Sisu!

Fellow (third gen) sweden-finn here. I moved to Finland a couple years back, and it was fucky for people that somebody with a finnish look, name and passport couldn’t speak finnish to save his life. May I ask, where in Sweden are you from OP?
I always wondered how Swede-Finns are seen in Sweden comparing to Fenno-Swedes here since Swedish history and culture is so intertwined with its Scandinavian neighbours, less with Finland.
Social circles in Fenno-Swedish areas divide pretty cleanly by language, though I’m happy that my inner circle has several Fenno-Swedes. It feels like the language thing is easy enough to get past if you make just a small effort.
It’s always interesting to hear how looked down on Finnish immigrants were in the 70s in sweden, considering what the approach to immigrants is now! And my parents remember how the Swedish state was *really* actively recruiting finns in the finnish media etc in the 60’s and 70’s, because we were in many ways close enough and the booming swedish industry needed workers, and a lot of finns needed jobs.
