      *”Objecting to bail, Garda Burke alleged that on the night in question* ***Mr O’Connell was driving a black 2007 VW Golf with “excess speed” and he attempted a “dangerous maneuver”, to undertake a Peugeot car.***

      *Garda Burke alleged Mr O’Connell’s VW Golf collided with the Peugeot forcing the Peugeot into a collision with a Nissan Micra car, which was being driven by Ms O’Reilly.*

      *Garda Burke told the court Ms O’Reilly, who was on her way to work at Shannondoc, was pronounced dead at the scene.*

      *Garda Burke said gardai had collected dash cam footage from the Peugeot car which showed the fatal collision.*

      *Garda Burke alleged that Mr O’Connell “fled the scene on foot” along with two occupants from his VW Golf, after it was “significantly damaged”.*

      *Garda Burke also alleged* ***Mr O’Connell “failed to provide assistance” to the other motorists at the scene.***

      *Garda Burke gave uncontested evidence that, on the day after the fatal collision, Mr O’Connell presented himself to gardai and admitted being the driver of the car that caused the fatal collision.*

      *Gardai were later in discussions with Mr O’Connell and formally arrested him on March 19, 2026.*

      *Garda Burke said there was “strong evidence” against Mr O’Connell, which, he said included independent witnesses; CCTV; and dash cam footage.*

      *The court heard uncontested evidence from Garda Burke that Mr O’Connell admitted to gardai that he is* ***“addicted to smoking cannabis” and that “he was under the influence of cannabis and ‘fast gas’” at the time of the fatal collision.***

      *Garda Burke said it was also his belief that, if granted bail, the accused would “continue to drive and pose a serious risk to the public” and that he would not answer the charges in court.”*

      # Dangerous driving

      It is an [offence to drive dangerously](https://www.lawreform.ie/_fileupload/RevisedActs/WithAnnotations/HTML/EN_ACT_1961_0024.htm#SEC52) in a public place. If you are convicted of dangerous driving, you could be fined up to €5000, or be sent to prison for up to 6 months, or both. If you are convicted of **dangerous driving causing death or serious bodily harm**, you could be fined up to €20,000 and imprisoned for up to 10 years, or both.

      I have no idea why some people insist on being so lenient on people who get fucking wasted and decide to hop in the car and tear down the road

      It’s not like people don’t know that this is a possible outcome

      And it’s not like the guy had a half pint and was over the limit, he was smoking weed and huffing nitrous oxide and driving

      And on and on and on it goes. No words will adequately describe that idiot and the poor victim. Need a serious review of why these accidents keep happening. Proper policing with very harsh penalties would help get these idiots before they kill and maim

      Is this a new thing? A while back I was driving and the car behind me flashed their lights, and then undertook me on the hard shoulder. Fucking crazy. And he then just stayed in front of me for the next few miles, in a line of traffic, until we got to a roundabout, and went off his own way. Like, he didn’t gain anything from it, and even if he was to overtake me like normal, he was no better off. But undertaking? What the fuck?
