Oggi, nel 1993, Gay Byrne sedeva di fronte ad Annie Murphy al Late Late Show. La relazione della donna americana con il vescovo Eamon Casey aveva scosso la nazione l’anno precedente. L’intervista è diventata un momento decisivo nell’evoluzione del rapporto dell’Irlanda con la Chiesa cattolica.
Lo scandalo scoppiò nel 1992 quando fu rivelato che Casey, il vescovo di Galway, aveva segretamente generato un figlio, Peter, con Murphy negli anni ’70. Ancora più dannoso, Casey aveva preso 70.000 sterline dai fondi diocesani e glieli aveva dati. Le rivelazioni lo costrinsero alle dimissioni.
Murphy aveva scritto un libro sulle sue esperienze, Forbidden Fruit: The True Story of My Secret Love for the Bishop of Galway. Il titolo da solo scandalizzò un’Irlanda ancora profondamente devota, dove l’autorità della Chiesa rimase in gran parte incontrastata.
L’approccio di zio Gaybo all’intervista è stato cauto, assicurandosi che le sue domande non condannassero apertamente Casey. Il suo tono era spesso ostile nei confronti di Murphy, allineandosi sottilmente con il vescovo caduto in disgrazia. He was a disgrace in this interview, as were the women in the audience. I felt terrible for Annie Murphy.

I love the Mike Murphy hidden camera thing where he’s taking the piss and winding Gay up (pretending to be a French tourist in the camera shot). You can see Gay getting more and more ratty – until he knows that he’s being filmed for his reaction, and suddenly he’s all laughs.
I suppose anyone in the very public position he was in would have a ‘persona’ to some extent. And the above is just a fairly silly thing that amused me. But that interview with Annie Murphy, well he might as well have been ringing the bell while leading a charge of “shame, shame”.
This interview changed how Gay Byrne was perceived. The public reaction at the time was largely negative. I’d been watching the Late Late for around 10 years at that stage, and it was the first time I could remember Gaybo being so confrontational towards a guest.
I will never not take the opportunity to express the belief that Gay Byrne was an utter cunt. Wasn’t just this interview either – he was awful to many of his guests and I’ve heard more than one account of him being an obnoxious tramp to service staff down the years. Fuck him.
I absolutely *hated* the way he treated her, it was unforgiveable. Always disliked him after that.
