Ah yes, protest the price and scarcity of fuel by… *checks notes*… driving really slowly and blocking the roads thus wasting everyone’s fuel including their own.

Not the smartest tools in the shed this group, are they.

This is so stupid. This is an issue completely outside the control of the Irish state. The government has already reduced excise duty on fuel, there’s really nothing else they can do about fuel prices. Oil is a cartel, and we’re not in the cartel.

The truck drivers that were aghast at Palestinian protesters blocking Dublin port are happy to block the M50

    Hypocrites

Can’t buy a house on an average salary…grumble on Reddit.

Fuel prices go up 15c per litre due to lunatic war in Iran…burn the whole system down.

Ive seen similar ones announced for cork and clare for tomorrow morning.

I’m just glad that these people accept that blocking traffic is a valid form of protests and will therefore still accept this when it is being done by those who they dont agree with.

The sooner we transition to electric vehicles and renewables, the better.

We could be 90% energy independent in a few years.

This will surely reopen the Strait of Hormuz and certainly isn’t a ploy at capitalising on a massive macro issue for sowing political agitation.

We are running out of fuel. Reducing the price will not create more. It will waste it quicker. Am i wrong?

  9. nerdling007 on

A better protest would be not turning up to work enmasse and staying home, rather than burning fuel you cannot afford to be burning right now. While yes the price gouging was scummy, from here on out it won’t be just price gouging but actual supply shortages that’ll drive up price. We might reach the point where people cannot actual get to work having not enough fuel in their tanks.

What a way to lose the room, fuck up everyone’s journey and burn more fuel into the bargain.

Absolute muppets. Looking through the people organising this, not very smart guys; truckers, farmers, taxi men, independent tds.

Will they be protesting over fertilizer prices next week?

  12. DocumentOk1598 on

Not to mention if these protests are “successful”, all they will actually achieve is yet another massive wealth transfer from our state to the energy companies.

And then these same fucking twits will return yet again in the next crisis and the next, until the state owns nothing at all but a sprawling debt.

The only way to ride out shockwaves like this long term is to own your own energy source. Which is a fairly hard thing for the government to do when THESE SAME ASSHATS push back against every renewable initiative the government tries

    > Organisers say they want the government to further reduce excise duty on fuel and remove the carbon tax.

Demanding that we remove the carbon tax because Iran are holding the world hostage might be the stupidest fucking thing I’ve ever heard.

Even if we fully abandon the carbon tax, and throw caution to the wind and accept the EU fines for not hitting emission goals, you’re saving about 16c per litre.

And when we reintroduce the carbon tax later down the line? Oh well we’d have to protest again because why are our government increasing the cost of fuel!?!

    Myopic dopes at it again.

  14. qwerty_1965 on

They could help by not driving at all. Supply matters more than price.

  15. BenderRodriguez14 on

Why do I get the feeling that a whole lot of those involved in this are also the types to ardently oppose cycle routes, public transport investment, and prioritisation of EVs and domestic green energy?

  16. RomfordWellington on

The blame for this lies solely with Messrs Trump and Netanyahu.

Take your protest to the American and Israeli embassies, and to Trump’s resort in Doonbeg.

If you’re going to be mad at the government, be mad at them for not going harder and faster on net zero/EVs/national grid improvements.

  17. hydraz20 on

Everyone saying the protests shouldn’t happen because it’s completely out of the government’s control is wrong. Plainly wrong.

The government can pressure other governments or can raise the issue to quickly sort the war. If enough governments have the guts to condemn the war and do something about it then maybe, maybe something will be done about it.

Having a protest shows at the global level the frustration of the people

  18. AdBoring9620 on

Schools open tomorrow as well. Chaotic if they protest during rush hour.

Signs sure to read: ‘nobody warned me’ and ‘where were the subsidies to switch!?’

The venn diagram of people protesting fuel prices, people buying ICE vehicles instead of electric and people who complain about cyclists.

  21. IcyEgg85 on

Jesus Christ, some morons on this sub.

A protest is 100% warranted considering the amount of tax placed and currently still on our fuel is extortionate and if mostly removed would make a massive difference to people struggling in this current crisis

Decades of FFG Government hosterity and policy has created these taxes on our fuel and if there was no protest the same gobshites here would be telling you to go organise a protest if you dont agree with it

  22. Commercial_Half_2170 on

If the government want to tackle this, wfh and start incentivising electrics again. This is only going to get worse once we start rubbing out of oil properly, and that’s closer than people realise

  23. Jakdublin on

How about a protest against the cause of the rising fuel prices? The world is pretty much sitting back and allowing Trump and the US to break numerous international laws and cause unprecedented global chaos.
