Il mese scorso io e mio fratello abbiamo avuto quello che posso solo descrivere come un incontro discutibile a Francoforte sul Meno.
Eravamo nella zona relax in attesa del nostro treno in coincidenza quando abbiamo notato un ragazzo (a giudicare dai suoi modi, molto probabilmente un tossicodipendente) che tentava di portare via il sacco a pelo di un uomo. Non in un modo astuto, tipo Oceans-Eleven… più come sussurrare Dio sa quali incantesimi (letteralmente) a se stesso mentre lentamente allontana la borsa. E sì, abbiamo provato a svegliare il ragazzo addormentato… tranne che era profondamente addormentato (per il contesto, era pieno giorno e l’atmosfera non era particolarmente accogliente). A quel punto, non eravamo nemmeno sicuri se stessimo aiutando un viaggiatore stanco/sobrio o qualcuno sotto l’influenza.
Quindi, come logico passo successivo, mio fratello è andato a cercare un agente di polizia… ma non ce n’era nessuno in vista. Nel frattempo, tutti gli altri intorno a noi si comportavano come se fosse tutto come al solito, un sabato normale se vuoi. Nessuna reazione tranne quella di una ragazza francese sorpresa/inorridita seduta accanto a noi. Sfortunatamente dovevamo prendere il treno e pensavo di essermene completamente dimenticato.
Ma un recente post su Reddit mi ha ricordato questo incidente e ora mi chiedo… Francoforte sul Meno è sempre così? O abbiamo appena assistito a un raro momento “quali sono le probabilità”? Qualche esperienza simile (anche in altre stazioni tedesche)?

Er, yeah, you should try not to fall asleep at train stations in general, or your stuff gets stolen.
Next time if you see something like that, make a ruckus. Like, get loud. “HALT! Ist das Ihre Tasche?” Once people around start staring, a thief will usually leave.
The Main Station and the Part around it are awful. The other parts of the town are quite nice (and nicer than the most germans know).
That’s pretty normal there. It’s basically what you expect to happen.
Frankfurt Hbf is one of the most dangerous places in Germany for a reason
The central station of Frankfurt was notorious 25 years ago and hasn’t changed.
The first time I have been there, I walked out of the station, across the road and saw for the first time soneone with a needle in his arm (and the only time so far).
Central stations are never nice places, but Frankfurt rankes as one of the worst.
Frankfurt Hauptbahnhof and the surrounding area is an absolute shithole. The smoking späti across the road is great though, always a couple weirdos hanging out inside. I like to drink in there when I’m waiting for my train.
Yeah thats our HBF for ya. We’re a very international city, and that means people in poverty living here. But there’s also a lot of extremely wealthy bankers here too, so just a really big inequality gap overall.
Many of the big, central train stations are notoriously awful. Frankfurt is the one I have to go through most frequently, and it’s a never-ending buffet of shit.
Don’t worry too much, but look after your valuables! FRK Hbf is run down and full of homeless and crack addicts, yes, but violent crime is very rare. The main risk are pickpockets, who depending on days can be abundant. Again, less than in e.g. Madrid‘s or Paris‘ train stations, but high by German standards.
And water is wet…
Frankfurt is chill, people are overreacting. Yeah, here are some drug cartels and prostitutes, but hey – nobody is perfect. I’m enjoying it for 5 years already – absolutely based town.
To be honest there are much worse main stations in Germany such as Berlin. The real issue is the region just outside where there arent permanent patrols. This tiny area genuinely makes people think the entire city is bad when its one of our cleanest and most peaceful.

Always been curious why european countries let their train stations turn into public drug injection and homeless camps.
The problem would be gone if you had to scan a ticket pre entry like in most of east Asia.
Just because you are homeless/addicted/mentally ill, should not give you a right to do drugs, defecate, or be a nuisance in the infrastructure we all rely on every day.
yes, Frankfurt’s worst area is directly outside. That of course does also influence the station itself a bit.

usually its safe in the station area but right outside the area are a lot of crack junkies
Twenty years ago I was snared in a large group detained by Polizei at 2 AM outside of Frankfurt Hbf. I was just minding my business whilst enjoying a Schinkenbrötchen. They followed me to a trash can so I could toss the wrapper while they ran everyone’s ID.

Hmm. I also saw a lady once was trying to slowly open the bag of passengers sitting besides me. I was pretending not to see but was closely keeping an eye on her. She was checking if there were people seeing her around. She got off at the next station as the announcement awoke the passengers. After she went, i checked and the bag was slightly open.
Those passengers were my parents. She couldnt take anything but had the journey been longer she perhaps might have. I was checking secretly.
She looked like from one of the countries who commonly do such things in hbf area – i wont say the name but you can easily guess.
I feel like most European big train stations are pretty sketchy. I had to wait from 12am to 5am for a bus outside the Brussels station and an older English lady asked if she could sit with me because she was getting bothered by a group of guys. There were 20-30 guys roaming around, climbing under busses to presumably stash packages, and watching for people who weren’t keeping an eye on their belongings. Made the Frankfurt Hbf look like a cakewalk

I was born and raised in Frankfurt. It’s a great city and I love it.
But when I visit, I’m always with my guard up at Hauptbahnhof.
Nothing like the smell of cold urine and months old sweat.
