Itaaly is probably starting to implement Windows 7

I hope the other EU countries follow this example.
Though I do expect that someone in Washington will once again start saying nasty things about the EU and about Macron personally- just as he did recently.

France seems to be the frontrunner to get detached from US monopolies. Kudos.

I need to follow this. If they pull it off, that’s probably the Linux fork I will want, as it’ll be the most like a traditional “old-school” Windows desktop as it can be.
And that’s what I want for my next computer, not Windows 12.

What, they’ve had enough of broken updates?

Good idea. The USA has become too much of a security risk to unnecessarily use their software. Office should also be removed.

I’m just pouring one out for the poor French IT support guys who are going to have to explain to 55 years old bureaucrats why their heavily macroscripted Excel sheets from 2006 don’t work anymore

Not a bad idea, it’d also be nice to see a proper state-backed Linux distro and potentially an EU-standard distro.
Some European countries have companies within them producing distros but a proper state procurement drive and potentially even funding for a standardised one would be a massive boon to stable computing within the EU and even beyond, as a Brit it’d make it easier to decide what one to standardise on for me.
(Also yes UK government, this is a hint that you *should* have been hyping Canonical up in trade talks like the US does MS and also maybe using it as the UK reference distro)

If it goes through, I see a nice potential secondary effect: lots of people will get exposed to Linux and might consider to also use it privately.

Put your money where your mouth at.
I hate Macron and his government but at least he’s not just virtue signaling about cutting the cord with America. It’ll take time for sure but every step counts.

I would love to be a fly on the wall of a communal office where Jean-Pierre is forced to work with Linux after 30 years Windows…
Pretty sure I would learn a bunch of new phrases I didn’t learn at school 🤣
