Viviamo a Monaco e oggi un ragazzo è venuto a montare questo dispositivo fuori dal nostro appartamento. Non abbiamo ricevuto nessuna lettera, nessun avviso, ha detto, voleva installare il dispositivo perché d’ora in poi non avranno più bisogno di entrare in casa per effettuare la lettura del riscaldamento e dell’acqua installando questo dispositivo. Ma questo dispositivo non è collegato a nulla. Qualcuno sa qualcosa a riguardo?

Should be fine. You can track your consumption in realtime with these devices. Just ask your Hausverwaltung.
ista (as seen on the device) is a company that does exactly this, remote monitoring of heating metres and such.
Call your Hausverwaltung and ask about it.
It’s awesome, wait till you receive monthly emails about your (heat) energy consumption.

TL:DR, it’s an internet gateway to check on all heating instruments across multiple apartments. Nobody has to come and check it in person anymore, data easily available and comparable.
If you also have a smoke detector from this company don’t touch it when you paint.
They have a tamper seal that breaks off and it costs 200€ to replace.

Why do people on r/germany automatically assume that any- and everything they don’t immediately understand is a scam?
How is a device installed outside your apartment without you having to cooperate or divulge any information supposed to scam you? You could’ve literally just googled the name on the box and found out that Ista is a serious energy solutions and digital service company specialising in, among other things, digital management (surveillance, billing and recording) of energy consumption.

Your phone isn’t connected to anything, either. You can use it to make phonecalls though. This box does virtually the same.

That device is part of the Bavarian Government Advanced Telemetry Program. They say it’s for heating and water readings, but everyone in Munich knows it’s actually a Type-7 Cognitive Resonance Scanner.
