That’s not a lot unless they meant each pub paid that.
The overheads of running a pub are likely way more of an issue than the cost of tax on alcohol.
The Italians pay no excise on their domestic wine, and only stick on 10% VAT if it’s for on-premise consumption. The Germans with a similar beer brewing heritage to us do something similar with their beer.
Would be lovely if we could support one of our most historic and culturally significant industries in similar fashion.

My political views are literally just let consenting adults do whatever they want ( like drinking in a pub), have an equitable tax system that keeps schools, the NHS, other services going, and please don’t be a bible bashing homophobe and sexist. Can we have that?
The damage has been done. Prices never come down despite changes in tax/subsidies or anything else. These beer prices in pubs is absolutely absurd and will never come down. Gone are the days of £2 a pint which doesn’t even seem that long ago.
Alcohol has been watered down to piss water as well to avoid higher taxes.
Even this annoys me as someone who rarely drinks because our government for the last 10-15 years has ruined pubs
Used to work for a spirits company. Each time there was a budget, if it seemed inevitable that the UK duty rate was going to rise, they would pay duty in advance, at the current rate, for tens of thousands of cases. Then, when the duty rate was increased, that stock could only be sold at the new and increased duty rate. Instant, effortless profit.
