Italy’s center-left opposition is testing out a big-tent alliance, guessing it’s the best way to unseat Giorgia Meloni at the next general election.

The rest is still being worked out.

The alliance pulls together parties with disparate political beliefs — the center-left Democrats, the populist Five Star Movement, the left-wing Greens and Left Alliance and several smaller groups. The goal is to rally behind single, strategically chosen candidates and consolidate the anti-Meloni vote.

The plan will get a crucial test on Sunday and Monday during gubernatorial elections in Campania and Veneto. The outcomes there will offer early bellwethers of the electorate’s mood.

    2. Haven’t voted for Meloni’s coalition and i think her government is not doing anything more than surviving but i’d rather have her as a PM than this left alliance. I think a lot of people in Italy have the same idea. Stability issues and straight misconceptions of the average italian’s worries would tear that alliance down before they even can establish new laws.
I’d much hope for a total destruction of Salvini’s party, Lega (anti-eu and close to pro-russia)

Anti-Meloni is full of pro-Russian, no good for Italy, no good for EU, until purged.

Sometimes it’s funny to see what the international media is about italian politics. I was very surprised that anybody could see a spark of change in what the opposition is doing right.

There have been many local elections since meloni won the national ones. One time the opposition parties find an agreement only to fight For the next one. Rinse and repeat.

Also, at national level the agenda of the parties involved are just incompatible and wouldn’t last one year.

Veneto will go to the right as always and the only surprising outcome for campania would be if the left manages to lose it

An opposition which only goal is to be the contrarians but factually useless

Looking on it from the outside, I am rather content with Meloni. There could be far worse.

She is not radically anti EU, she is pro Ukraine, pro NATO and hard on migration. Her reform ideas for EU are not my cup of beer. She is closer to what I hope from a conservative politician than the old mainstream parties and the lunatics on the far right. Only real problem is the fascists that lurk under her carpet.

lmao the anti-Meloni bullshit is so forced outside of italy its obvious there’s outside backing from somewhere else.

      “shes far right racist!!!”

      sure mate,

Meloni has been relatively stable in Italy so far after a period of the opposite. If the voters decide to confirm her that wouldn’t be the worst thing for Italy, also in terms of European politics, there needs to be an end of the French-German hegemony and Italy is the most realistic country to challenge that thanks to its size and the big economy.

Yes, when her first mandate is 80% done.

Man our political scene is royally fucked isn’t it

I will be honest the last thing Italy needs is an unstable “grand leftwing coalition” that only works as long as they want to get rid of Meloni

These things never go well and never last
