Start with the no doctored fares first. Taxi drivers have a very fucking inflated impression as to how the public perceives the industry.

“National Private Hire and Taxi Association spokesman Jim Waldron believes that the NTA’s regulated fare system ensures transparency for both drivers and passengers – and is now under threat.”

What could be more transparent than knowing what the fare is before you book a taxi?

Taxi drivers run their own personal fiefdom/cartel – every single reform that would benefit the public they have lobbied against. The sooner there’s a reasonable alternative to them that isn’t exploitative like Uber, the better.

What use to cost €10 now cost €15 when I have to get the very odd taxi to work.

    >”Taxis have to operate on the meter. The driver is permitted to give discounts if he wants, but that’s up to the driver himself.

“This situation is preventing the driver from giving a discount himself. It’s making it compulsory that he gives a discount. And that’s what the problem is,” he said.

If they don’t want to give the discount then they shouldn’t accept the job… very simple, it’s not compulsory

Am I missing something here? Did someone force them to sign up to work with Uber?

Wasn’t there a big taxi shortage not that long ago?

Has the market really moved that quickly back into the hands of the consumer that the drivers genuinely feel threatened by this?

I can honestly say that the introduction of ride share apps without needing a taxi license is the best thing for the public. Taxis are an archaic remnant of a bye gone era that needs to go. Transparent fares, abundant drivers and a rating system to hold both sides accountable is the way forward.
