I mean. If you sell something for less than it’s worth, you are handing money to the buyer. Whoever bought those flats had an easy trade, they could go sell them to someone else for a tax free profit. With the discounts people are getting, it doesn’t matter that you have to wait 5 years.

How did the rules allow this? It’s insane. I don’t mind people being allowed to buy off the council, but they have to buy it at a price that reflects the value. Google the scheme, the discounts are ridiculous. 50% on a flat, rising to 70%? Where is there a flat in London for less than six figures? If I’m reading this correctly (and it does sound nuts) we’re gifting people a couple of years of minimum wage, at the very least.

If we are having a discount, any subsequent sale needs to make the public whole on the discount, and the public should get a piece of the upside beyond that.

Just reading this off the government website seems unbelievable. How are people not queuing up to do this as soon as they are eligible?

Well that was incredibly stupid, should have immediately spent the £10m building new social housing stock rather than pocketing the money. We just love short term gains, for long term pain in this country. So short sighted.

    3. Could they not have included some protections with right to buy? Something that states the house can not be sold or rented out, outside of specific circumstances.

I’ve got to say that on a political level right to buy was a genius move by Thatcher.

It utterly ruined the social housing system which has never recovered (for instance in 1970 a third of housing was publicly owned) and it created a huge home owning class which has been much more likely to vote conservative and be nimbys to drive up their house prices.

Labour has just been utterly outplayed on every level in not even being able to end the scheme. It’s a huge cash giveaway to buy conservative votes in perpetuity and obviously a terrible idea for anyone who wants to efficiently spend money to actually house people.

And now it has completely trashed the economy because the government has to spend a lot of money housing people and because housing is so expensive they have to keep putting up taxes so we doom spiral downwards.

Thatcherism still dominates the UK, “Starmerism” can’t even be defined.
