To give a taxi drivers perspective..
The fear based on how Uber acts in other markets is that once the fixed fare scheme is established, then Uber will reduce the amount offered to the driver out of the fare.
The second fear is that if it’s a success, then the other apps will have to adopt the same strategy to maintain market share.
Basically we can foresee falling wages in an ever increasingly expensive trade.

This will endear their cause to the Irish public. A bold move.

Didn’t know these drivers were stuck using Uber? Should probably start there first no? Seems we can just block up the roads and inconvenience everyone now. Fuck people trying to get flights.
All these 24 hour bus routes can’t come quick enough tbh.

These protests have already been attempted in other countries when apps changed their terms there. They always fail because of a simple truth: taxi drivers are unnecessary for society.

Taxi fare rates are set by the NTA. From what I read, Uber’s fixed cost for the consumer isn’t meaning the taxi is paid less and it doesn’t mean they a circumventing the rules on rates. What it does mean is the consumer pays no more than the agreed rate at the beginning of the journey. Which is a good thing for the consumer.
On the face of it, it’s little different to a removal of dynamic pricing.

Jokes on you taxi drivers, Dublin is already at standstill.

  7. Probably a slightly off topic ramble but I wish Bolt was as useful here as it is in mainland European countries. I don’t understand why more don’t shift over to that when Uber and Freenow are subpar for drivers and customers.

My partner and I needed a taxi recently and we’re in Dublin and even with both of us trying Bolt on our phones nobody would accept the ride. We didn’t want to use Freenow or Uber but were left with no choice. I realise it needs a large enough consumer base to attract the drivers and vice versa, but surely it’s the direction to go.

2000 drivers suddenly dropping Uber and going to Bolt would send a larger message than a protest that they can ignore.

Here’s an idea. Uber is a private business that no-one is forced to use. So protest by not using their app.

We need to start banning these large Ameican vulture  corporations in Europe.
Uber, Airbnb etc.   Make our own….slightly less dystopian apps.

Stupid question maybe but why don’t they or their union make their own app? It’s not difficult

  11. It would be great if taxis could be trusted not to act the maggot. I’ve had some scrappy experiences either flagging down a taxi or using FreeNow.

I reckon I have about as much sympathy for taxi drivers as they have for me on a Saturday night when it’s pissing rain and they drive off when I tell them where I’m going because it’s not a big enough fare.

Reality is all these jobs will be gone in 5 – 7 years. Waymo is expanding rapidly throughout the US, while Robotaxi and Zoox are starting to take off. Autonomous taxi rides have already become the preferred method of transport for so many in the US due to safety concerns. A Waymo doesn’t break the speed limit, have a driver that hasn’t showered in 3 days, or tell you their credit card machine isn’t working.

Uber foolishly killed off their autonomous car research and will pay for it as they get left behind by google and tesla etc.

Taxi drivers can fuck right of. Always want everything their own way.

So the way to protest unfair app complany practices is to prevent people from getting home after a days work?,

Can I suggest that if this goes ahead, everybody boycott taxis for the weekend?

Maybe off topic but was the traffic on Tuesday related to this or has the traffic just got to Celtic tiger levels again.
