Basically 25% over the speed limit, but the speed limit had recently changed so no big deal. No shock at who the judge is…

Someone must have some dirt on Mr N by now – no investigative journalism anymore ,

    >Her car had crossed onto the other side of the road.

    >She was given a fully suspended two-and-a-half-year sentence and disqualified from driving for a period of six years.

If you want to kill someone in this country, do it in a car.

She was driving at 62. The speed limit had just changed from 60 to 50 on the road. For some reason however she swerved across the road. Very sad stuff

Anyone know the spot on Google maps where this happened

Strange etiquette in the article where they refer to the widow as Ms. I was always taught the correct form was Mrs. when referring to a widow who had taken her husbands name.

As for the rest of the article I assume the driver was on her phone…

No explanation as to why she swerved to the other side of the road but apparently that was a minor violation…

A man is dead. What the fuck, judge Nolan?

This has to be too lenient. Hope this gets the same attention the Joe Drennan case got.

Sure, suspended sentences are great deterrents.

As are bans that are never enforced anyway.

And we wonder why nothing changes?

It’s not a mystery, she had not slept.

    >Duffy spent the previous night with her son in hospital and left there at 9am. ([From the Irish Times](https://www.irishtimes.com/crime-law/courts/2025/11/26/woman-who-killed-cyclist-on-malahide-road-in-dublin-given-suspended-sentence/))

The only mystery is how Judge Martin Nolan doesn’t think that fact isn’t an aggravating factor.

    >Judge Martin Nolan said he could not find any aggravating factors in the case and gave a fully suspended sentence.

From the RSA Rules of the road:

    >You should not drive while tired or fatigued. Research has shown that tired drivers are a major road safety risk, both to themselves and to others.

    >If you are tired and fighting sleep, you are likely to experience ‘micro sleeps’. These episodes can last up to 10 seconds and can be experienced even when your eyes are open.

    >During a micro-sleep of even 4 seconds, your car can travel 100 metres (more than the length of a football pitch) without you being in control of your vehicle.

If you ever want to murder someone in Ireland & get away with it, use a car. Sure they’ll even let you drive again in a few years.

    Crazy carry on

No it’s clearly not fair. She was over speed limit (62 in a 50kmh) and on wrong side of the feckin road, and as it was a cyclist killed, it probably wasnt a fraction over white line. A lifetime ban, a large fine and custodial sentence are a minimum requirement.

If you want to do a crime in Ireland be a woman. Bonus points if you have kids that “no one else can look after 🤧”

Her sentencing doesn’t matter, it won’t act as a deterrent for anyone else and won’t improve road safety. In my opinion, the risk of prosecution for killing someone on the roads has no impact on how people drive, because people believe that it will never happen to them …until it does. At that stage your life is ruined, since most people out there could never live with killing someone.

The only thing that will make people consider their driving habit is if the rules of the road are heavily policed. The deterrent is knowing that you could very easily get a fine and penalty points by driving dangerously, on the phone or speeding.

  15. PsvfanIre on

This is a huge part of why our roads are carnage, the penalties are not consistent with the negligent crimes.

  16. I almost got hit by one last night . She didn’t stop at the intersection and kept coming towards me . I saw her and stopped but she didn’t . She finally saw me and stopped centimeters away . That could have gone really bad.

The DPP can, and should appeal on the grounds of undue leniency.

People need to remember stories like this when they slag cyclists and joke about hitting them
