I would add that siding with Ukraine is in America’s interests because the set borders and the rules-based order made all the prosperity we’ve had possible. Defending an ally and the free world should be enough. But even if we wanted to be completely selfish and we didn’t care about being good people ourselves, it would still make sense to keep Ukraine whole and safe.
The main issue here is that people sit down at the table with trump voters, religious nuts, narcissists and all sort of other crazy. This is the only leverage they have over you – that they claim to be your family and as if due to that you had to give them more leeway. But this is actually nothing but a selfish nepotism. If you have to cut the crazy away, yes, it hurts, and if you don’t do this and for that reason the crazy thrives, that’s selfishness. And if you would not have anything to do with any other extreme nut, would not take any of their shit and would not give them any power over you but now you let all this happen with this specific nut because they are your father/mother/sister/brother, that is nepotism because you choose relation over justice. Justice is righteous but of course it is also harsh and difficult. But life is short and none of us will take any of these nuts with us. Better die standing than live on your knees.
