When Olena Horlova leaves home or drives through town outside the southern Ukrainian city of Kherson, she fears that she’s a target. She believes that Russian drones could be waiting on a rooftop, along the road or aiming for her car.
To protect herself and her two daughters, the girls stay indoors, and she stays alert — sometimes returning home at night along dark roads without headlights so as not to be seen.
After living through the occupation, refusing to cooperate with Russian forces and hiding from them, Horlova, like so many other residents, found that even after her town was liberated in 2022, the ordeal didn’t end.
Kherson was among the first places where Russian forces began using short-range, first-person view, or FPV, drones against civilians. The drones are equipped with livestreaming cameras that let operators see and select their targets in real time. The tactic later spread more than 300 kilometers (185 miles) along the right bank of the Dnipro River, across the Dnipropetrovsk, Kherson and Mykolaiv regions.

Average Russia moment.
There has to be some new rules of engagement implemented regarding drones. I’ve seen too many horrific videos of drones on both sides just rolling up to hiding, crying, and praying soldiers and just blowing them up. Even worse when it’s targeting civilians.
It takes a sadistic mind to sit hundreds of miles away and press a button to end someone’s life who doesn’t even want to be there.
I honestly lost patience with russians. I know this is controversial but even those in Europe we can’t trust them.
Build the biggest wall in History. Cut all diplomatic ties with russia. Isolate them completely. Create a european super-army so strong it would make us too dangerous for any of those nations to even think threatening us.
They only respond when real strength is put on the table and talking gets nowhere with these people. No negociation is possible. They’re too different from us, they don’t value human lives. All russia did for hundred years is to invade, genocide and destroy their neighbors.
Europeans as usual are way too soft and naive. Even when Russia goes after our own neighbors in the most brutal ways imaginable, we barely react. We talk, we worry, we send statements.
But we never actually do enough. Ukrainians are protecting us from them. Some of the only men left in Europe are dying for us as we speak now. They should NOT be left behind..
We need a real leadership that unites all europeans. If one threatens one of us we should act like one man. We are one big family.
