I think I’ve come to the mind that if you take a life then you get a mandatory life sentence. Now that doesn’t mean life in prison. It means you are forever on ‘conditions’, and they can be whatever society deems just. In this case I think permanent ban from driving and alcohol. You don’t get to just serve 7 years (which is what, less than 5 years with good behaviour?) and then carry on as if nothing ever happened.
