If the official rules for renaming public places are being followed consultation, committee approval, full council vote why is the Herzog Park rename causing such uproar? The process exists for a reason, and it’s being applied here. If the community gets a say and procedures are transparent, shouldn’t that be enough to have a fair discussion?

Can’t we just say it’s named after Werner Herzog ?

Ah, I’m not surprised that it’s Alan Shatter having a conniption over a potential renaming.

    > A motion regarding the name of Herzog Park made by Labour Party councillor, Fiona Connelly, in December 2024 was adopted by the council’s South East Area Committee.

    >Connelly sought a report on the process of how the park was originally named after Chaim Herzog as she claimed that she had been informed that the naming of the park “did not follow the correct procedures” at the time.

I’d also be very interested in learning more about what’s in that report.

Renaming things isn’t anything new. And honouring someone who supported & participated in ethnic cleansing doesn’t sit well with me, personally.

I know Israel isn’t popular here, but if an Irish person became President of any other country, we’d name a park or street after them.

I think there’s a solution that will make everyone happy. Rename it Ben Briscoe park. An Irish Jewish patriot. Could rename it after one of the Goldbergs but they’re from Cork. Can’t be naming Dublin parks after Cork people

11 councillors were present for this meeting 1 objected. I am about as pro Palestine as anyone. Even I feel this is petty. His Da supported a free Ireland, he was fluent in Irish.

Crazy point of perspective there. Ancient stuff altogether.

  9. Herzog is an important part of Irish history and a symbol of the Jewish community. The state of Israel, while committing terrible acts currently. Israel can’t be undone and is something that shouldn’t be considered as something to be evil or wrong for existing.

Just as Northern Ireland shouldn’t or the British community in the North shouldn’t be considered as evil or wrong. By doing so we are just feeding into hate and division and moving away from a respectful mutually beneficial peaceful future.

The Jewish community in Dublin have always been important and people like Herzong were instrumental in enshrining freedom of religion in the Irish constitution during the founding of the state. Herzong was a fluent Irish speaker, active in the independence movement.

  10. Don’t be stupid. The actions of modern Israel should not mean the erasure of all references to important history.
