      >Indeed, finding peacetime equivalents for the disappearance of the Cockneys is seriously difficult. You might argue for New York City in the late 19^(th) century. Buenos Aires is also a possibility, from 1870 to 1914.

      >However, these examples don’t read across to London, because New York and Buenos Aires were, during their ethnic evolutions, fundamentally immigrant cities. There was not so much a replacement as an invited influx, deliberately willed by the government of the day.

Does someone need to explain to the author that London attracts an absolutely gargantuan number of visitors and immigrants every year? Behind New York and Sydney its one of the most popular immigrant destinations in the world.

But that’s not as exciting as subtly hinting at some kind of White Genocide narrative is it I guess.

As a non-white Brit I apologise to the article author for daring to move to London.

Know what’s really missing from this article, which makes it really deceptive?

      Population figures.

London today has just about the same population as it had in 1939, about 9m. In the 1990s it had hit a low of 6.5m. Immigrants didn’t “replace” anyone, they’d moved out years ago.

Even going back to 1920s and 1300s it was still unprecedented

    5. So having a look at the ONS data , London has 59.4% of its population thats British born. I dont see White British broken out as a demographic but it can be calculated from the data

But overall it should come as no surprise to people that the largest cities are more demographically diverse, that tends to be the case in any country that has a large immigrant population.

You can be sure when you see a source that’s the torygraph, its misinformation

This shit is just exhausting. London is a fantastic city that attracts immigrants from around the world.

I’ve worked in London for years and my work colleagues have always been a united nations of different nationalities, ethnicities and backgrounds.

    8. I don’t see all the cockneys who made a mint from selling their Right To Buy ex-council houses complaining about their new circumstances. Well… not all the time.

Neoliberal policies that have led to gentrification, redevelopment, and deindustrialisation are big drivers of the demographic changes that have happened in post war London. But they are also big drivers of the economic growth that London has experienced over the same time frame, and the reason why London continues to be a centre of global finance long after the end of the British Empire.
