Always a contentious topic and some people just prefer sitting in and that’s fine. But what is happening so many small town pubs across the country is a disgrace. The pub isn’t just people who get rat arsed every week, it’s the couple who go for a couple after mass who otherwise don’t see many. Where some who live alone get a laugh and familiarity and the likes. Where you find a man/woman and yeah if you want a place to get rat arsed and go on home.
Even aside from it when we are seeing these places go and all that replaces them are apartment or office space it’s as if towns are designed for people to spend, work, sleep and eventually die.
I love a pint, I love 6. I never touch a drink in the house ever I’m not into it. But a pub just feels different and even if I’m alone the feel of it is class. I’m in a new town for work and it’s helped me meet so many helpful people.

I think it’s just the reality that pubs are an outdated business model. Now some will remain, but most of the remaining figure will close as a country were just moving away from the pub

Great news. The push away from alcohol is to be welcomed. Lot’s if other community outlets for people who are into that.

The answer is to allow people to create viable third places. Traditonally we have three bug ones in Ireland, the pub, the church and GAA. All three are far ideal.
Anyone trying to set up alternatives gets to the insurace question and that’s a huge hurdle. A goverment social activity insurnace fund pf sometype would help.
