Mi chiedo solo perché questi segnali siano qui.

I believe some vehicles are allowed, just not general traffic.

  2. EinNameWaereGut on

Bikes are allowed at walking speed and only if they do not endanger pedestrians. No cars allowed except for police/firefighters/…

  3. Manu_Braucht_N_Namen on

    No motorized* vehicle allowed**

    * excluding small motorized vehicles like these electric scooters
** except for emergency vehicles, recycling and so on

  4. charles_the_snowman on

The only motorized vehicles that should ever be there are emergency services (police, firefighters, ambluance, etc).

  5. Some vehicles are permitted in pedestrian areas if they’re service vehicles or residents (in some cases). They are required to drive “Schrittgeschwindigkeit”, <5 kmh

  6. ThengarMadalano on

No cars allowed. Most places have exeptions for delivery in the morning hours but this isnt the case here.

You are right, only police, ambulance or firefighters can drive in. And bikes of course. Usually there is an extra sign that allows people living in the street and deliveries to drive in, but here it’s not the case.

Without any additional signs for delivery, local residents etc., the pedestrian zone sign bans all cars.

A lot of people generally act like assholes and pretend that because they’re local, or “they’ve always known the area”, they can go through there. Violations of traffic law are considered minor by many Germans.

lol, ok thanks…it is obviously not being enforced because MANY times we have come through there and police are also riding through this area at the same time as other cars. And it is LITERALLY just around the corner from the main police station in the innenstadt.

Generally no but there are exceptions. Usually residents would be allowed, deliveries and emergency or service vehicles. Sadly many Germans like to take the risk they wouldnt face consequences and use such roads anyways.

Cars might go if they live nearby (perhaps an apartment above a shop?), or there is a business and there’s a delivery. But usually then there are signs about it, and they have to go ‘Schritttempo’. Plus emergency services, etc.

But no, it’s not for through traffic.

  12. This is right in front of _[Parkhaus Marktplatz](https://maps.app.goo.gl/vnwLMT1KuwZF7GGeA)_ in Karlsruhe. The sign in the picture indicates that this is a pedestrian area accessible to bicycles, including electric bikes. Therefore, you cannot enter this area with your car.

The only way to get out of there is to do a u-turn and return to Hebel- and then Karl-Friedrich-Straße. All other roads lead to dead ends. Trust me, I’ve been at the same place a week ago.

Edit: To answer your question: the _Karlsruhe Innenstadt_ quarter is ~~and has always been~~ a giant pedestrian area. This marks the start of it and makes the sign necessary.

  13. That’s Germany, they just want to pretend they have safe and walkable cities like Denmark in the Netherlands, but don’t actually want to do the work beyond putting some signs.

  14. Welcome to Germany. The laws are not as binding if it could restrict cars.

A question related to this photo: If I saw a private car driving in this area (assuming they aren’t allowed here) and I take a photo or video of its Kennzeichen, will they be apprehended? And am I violating anyone’s Privacy here?

  16. tekteqqq on

Generally there are no cars allowed, but sometimes there are exceptions or special permits – these are locally regulated. Some of these can include authorities, ambulances, police, deliveries, residents, Taxis & public transport, craftsmen, careworkers, disabled people and I’m sure there are some more niche ones.

It does not seem like your city council sees it as a problem, as they could easily prevent it. The most important thing is the following though: Generally anyone driving there (including bikes) is only allowed to drive at walking speed. Pedestrians always have right of way.

  17. Well.. car drivers and cyclists find all kinds of excuses to ignore signs. In this case, you are perfectly fine with a bicycle and cars… well… they just choose to ignore it.

Very likely police and Ordnungsamt don’t consider enforcing it a priority.

  18. Kitzu-de on

Even if a driver is allowed to drive into there, you as a pedestrian are prioritized higher. Any car has to adjust to you / the other pedestrians, not the other way around. You can walk as slowly as you like, you can even stop and stand for a while and drivers have to wait patiently and honking at you or similar could be coercion.

I one time entered such street in Bremen and some 4 or 5 cars passing near by started honking and warned me.. thanks to them , i made a quick u-turn.

I confused it with the Play or Kids zone (Verkehrsberuhigter Bereich)
