The only Gail’s I’ve ever been to is the Birmingham branch which certainly earned its failed hygiene rating so this scale is incomprehensible to me, but at least there’s a business that is in a position to scale in this economy.

Never been to Gail’s, what kind of items do they traditionally sell as their staple

    3. BigBeanMarketing on

Gail’s is excellent, I’m chuffed that something a bit upmarket is managing to find a good foothold in this turbulent economy.

This feels like one of those ‘Gails closes 40 bookstores’ articles in about 2-3 years

A Gails opened recently in Leamington Spa and it is basically been a money printing machine from day one. They have definitely captured a middle class market of customers.

    6. standard private equity garbage just like blank street, shame

Maybe it’s because I’m a peasant but my colleague brought in the famous soho buns and for the price, I thought it just tasted like a small and stale chocolate chip brioche bun. I’d much rather the cheap brioche buns from the supermarket to soak into my tea

I say bring back Percy Ingle when it used to be good

they’re charging £15 for 6 mince pies! how do enough people eat at gails in this economy??

It’s an OK bakery, but nothing to write home about imo. There is a local bakery near me that is amazing, they do lovely lunch options.

Ah, the red Greggs. It’s sort of looks like a decent independent bakery and has the prices to match, but has the quality of a Greggs.

Except the vegan stuff. Greggs is way better.

Please come to West Ealing Broadway. Need to gentrify that place asap.

Where are all the people complaining that they’re broke and the country has gone to the dogs? Clearly enough people DO have money to spend.

    13. kassiusx on

      Not great news.

Not a UK owned business (Bain capital) and killing independent coffee/cafes.

My local one already opened. They applied for tables on the pavement where they are on a roundabout overlooking a bus station and popular train station, and the pavement is already ridiculously narrow. I don’t know what tf they were thinking. They also like to leave their rubbish bags lying on that part of the pavement so it’s difficult to get past until they’re picked up. Safe to say I’m not going to be giving them any money.

Private equity shite. Go to a local independent place instead.

Never understood the appeal of Gail’s. I always hear they open up a store in an area and choke local businesses, but it makes me wonder why people are choosing a basic chain over genuinely good local cafes?

I thought this was going to be a story about Gail from Corrie going on a ribbon cutting spree..

They’re getting the Patisserie Valerie treatment. Get ready for mass closures in 2029 when it’s been asset stripped. It’s the staff I feel sorry for

I prefer Le Pain Quotidien if we are talking fancy overpriced bread.

    20. People are buying half a sandwhich for £8?!?

What happened to the cost of living crisis??

Everyone: *Gail’s is an attractive middle quality, middle price-point cafe chain and bakery that everyone can enjoy, I’m sure nobody will have an issue with the all-round good news that it’s great success is having…*

It’s the golden age of Gail’s when ingredients are fresh, well sourced and premium. They do bake in store and if you at the right time in the morning then the food is very good. It’s not a worldie bakery and I do err toward independent but it’s clean, bright and consistent.

Once the PE changes from growth stage to profit stage, it’ll get the Pret treatment. Gross baked off shite

    23. Zephinism on

I wish Galloways Bakers could expand like Gail’s has. Kudos to them.

    24. toastedipod on

I’m so sick of the chain mentality that is pervasive across the UK. As soon as anything does well it has to be replicated across every single high street and means we have some of the most boring and repetitive town centres in the world.

They’re identikit Oxfam, Greggs, Costa, Poundland, Boots, WHSmith, Ladbrooks, Card Factory, Primark, McDonalds, ____ Lounge, Gails

    25. deci_bel_hell on

Gails is the scourge of the high st. Stale and extortionate.

    26. PartyPoison98 on

I dont understand the value of Gail’s. Its more expensive than other chains, but not as good as independent places at a similar price point.

    27. The_Final_Barse on

This is literally the first I’ve ever heard of Gail’s.
