He cannot accept an independent Ukraine existing after his 3 day special fiasco operation. A credible alliance structure which would defend Ukrainian sovereignty in the inevitable case of Russia coming back for the rest is the only way forward.

I think a majority of people are failing to understand one of the key pillars of these negotiation tactics by the Russians. In addition to buying more time to somehow achieve their unattainable military goals, Russia constantly engaging with the US in negotiations grants Russia a spotlight as a world power again.

They are so afraid of people coming to terms with who they truly are, a Chinese vassal state full of humans that don’t want to act in accordance with modern society. Russia has not created or done one thing of value for themselves or the world, all they know how to do is rape, steal, murder, lie, and pretend. By “negotiating” with the US, by proxy they get to be viewed as an equal. Looks mean more than reality with authoritarians.

He’s purposefully dragging this out, on off old Russian stalling tactics. His goal is to create media confusion and stall weapons shipments from allies. Everything Moscow does is smoke and mirrors and the west still seem to not understand this 4 years into the conflict in its current form. Putin never agreed to any deal that did not include Ukraine’s surrender and complete disarmament. He cannot end the war either, because otherwise the extremely poor state of the Russian economy would become apparent, and soldiers returning from the front would commit many violent crimes in Russia, causing chaos. He cannot risk this given the instability that already prevails in Russia.
