I’m against kids having IG/TiK Tok/Twitter accounts but technically YouTube is a social media so I’m unsure about this, the wording will have to be watertight.

It’s just a ploy so they can bring in the same ID scanning bullshit on everyone like the UK. Start shopping for VPNs I guess.

Total IDing for all sites with anything “adult” it’ll be then, dismal.

It would be a waste of resources. Children would figure out a way around it so fast, creating even more sneaky secretive behaviour , encouraging open discourse and much more education about online safety seems to most sensible option in my opinion

Children should absolutely be nowhere near social media like Instagram, TikTok, Snapchat, etc. There are new studies coming all the time about the negative impacts social media has on children and teenagers, but even broader phone usage and screen time.

Will be curious to see what constitutes social media though, does that include YouTube? I’m not familiar with how Australia implemented it.

I can understand the reasoning behind this but as a parent I say fuck this you don’t get to decide if and when my child gets to use social media. That’s my and my partners decision no one else.

They need to prevent their parents from oversharing them. That’s the biggest crisis. None of these kids can consent, there are massive problems ahead for them.

The nanny state in action again. They sure love banning or overtaxing things here

This is going to be one of scenarios where people will claim social media is toxic and needs to be addressed but nothing meaningful should be done to address it.

lol this is gas to me.. ban kids from social media. But also give the lightest sentences possible to literal pedophiles and sex offenders?

Its probably doing just as much harm, albeit in a different form, to adults. Its off the leash and I genuinely think this is just the start of a pretty big cultural shift at this rate.

Finally a nanny state i can get behind, my 9 year can use my YouTube account if he really needs gaming walk throughs

Massively agree with the ban but also 100% aware this government will fuck up the implementation. Tough call.

How do they define “social media” and “children”.

  15. ruthemook on

Anyone under 18 should not be allowed a social media account. In fact maybe extend it. It’s a pox that has done nothing good at all to our society and how we interact with one another.

Aka everyone else will have to produce ID to access social media. Slippery slope, not good

I don’t have or plan to have children but I would still fully support this. Even aside from the risks to children in terms of grooming etc something needs to be done to address the fact that it’s become so normalised for children and teens to have the memory of a goldfish. That is not healthy and in the future there will be studies on how social media completely fucked them up. Now is the time to do something about it.

Sorry I know it said about verification in the app store. But if this comes in and I swap from Apple to Android or vice versa and I’ve to set up on the new app store do I’ve to provide my ID for full access?

My own stupidity, I had my number on my Facebook account, not my profile, my account to log in years ago. My number was one that was in that major Facebook data breach. I know it came from there because scammers always call me the name I’ve on that which I use nowhere else.

Yeah I’m hoping the Google or Apple store will be more secure but c’mon, scammers will be like Homer Simpson and the Venus de Milo for it.

Secondly, why can’t parents just give them a dumb phone or tell them you are allowed on Instagram etc and check they aren’t.

Great idea. How is it enforced? Hardly gonna rely on parents are we ….
