“voluntary”? We had a voluntary army for the last decades. It’s back to cold war compulsory service with a hint of chance and a note of draft.

concerning, is there any precautions for not drafting ultra nationalist or neo n@zis? like background check?

Is there any positive to look forward to in the future? Like jesus christ. Every single day things gets worse and worse. This is awful

  6. When men and women reach the age of 18, they receive a letter requesting their opinion on military service. While men are required to respond, women have the option to do so. If the required number of personnel each year is not met, Parliament can declare a mandatory service for men, using a lottery process to determine the participants.
Conscientious objection is still open within the law.
Conscripts get 2600€ per month and can get up to 3500€ for a driver licence.

So…only for 18? WTF?!?! If they don t get enough man voluntarly…they will choose once again only from those 18? Those who are 22, 23 are ok? Lol

This seems to be shaping up to be a terrible deal for young German men.

It’s funny how is EU moving literally in the opposite direction to Russian and Chinese military model that are relying more and more on contract army and dedicated military careers.

  12. Sounds like Scandinavian or Lithuanian conscription model where a significant part of draft quota is filled up with the ones who sign voluntarily. When the Lithuanian conscription was reintroduced in 2015, for some years even nobody had to be drafted as there were enough volunteering for the service. This German model definitely sounds more similar to what we have now rather than to our really volunteer basic military trainining of 2009-2015.

Congratulations for Germany finally realising its core spot in European security and regaining strength to defend democracy and freedom.

Can’t help but wonder if young German men feel that the country is worth fighting for in its current state with its need to put barriers around every Christmas market 🤔

If they make the system like American military system, everyone will join. The only reason a lot of Americans join the military is that they pay pretty good salaries to people who basically have high school education.

Let’s hope German rearmament and conscription doesn’t go the way it historically did. Especially with rise of far right and far left parties.

The EU countries have decided to rearm or up their military budgets because the United States no longer acts like a reliable partner…. The twisted irony? American conservatives have always kind of resented the European Union as an affront to their values…. And now their
diplomatic bungling has driven EU countries to rearm and become even more powerful / a more empowered European Union would stand up for human rights equality democracy etc…. All the stuff the reactionaries hate

They’ll vote for anything other than providing said youth with a good economy and opportunities aplenty.

Real headline is “Germany plans to increase size of its army and reserve to 260k in 10 years”

Means that Germany, nations of 85 million, will in 10 years have reserve that is around 30% of what Finland, nation of 5.5 million, has today.

There is currently a massive hole in security of Europe, and THIS is what you do? Fucking hell, that’s so pathetic.

One might mistakenly think that wealthiest nation in Europe could afford to provide military training to 1 million.

So can I sign this as an American and join the Werchmagth for citizenship?
