Absolutely horrendous. That doula should *never* be near a birth again. Calling it support while pushing high risk freebirth ideas and linking women to dangerous online influencers is beyond irresponsible. It’s shocking how vulnerable women end up believing this is safe.

    > she was following influencers who advocated for birthing somewhat outside of the medical system

These people need to be stopped

  3. Reading the article and how it describes the modus operandi of the ‘free birth influencers’ – it reminds me of so many of the autism influencers.

    Step 1: encourage self-diagnosis.

Step 2: sell courses (etc) to your newly created and ever expanding market of self-diagnosed individuals.

Step 3: if you can’t sell courses, farm engagement and collect revenue from social media platform hosting your ‘content’.

    Step 4: profit.

    Step 5: repeat.

And so it goes with a multitude of physical & mental health domains. Some more destructive than others. One of the more toxic aspects of social media that flies under the radar **and I hate it.**

All social media influencers need to go, at the very least regulated.
From health and fitness to beauty, the majority are unqualified and have no business ethics. Don’t even get me started on the “Mammy” influencers.

Oh God, the poor woman. I’ve had a bad experience and a child with lifelong issues (nothing severe, thankfully) due to labour. I wish a decision was taken more urgently and have a lot of guilt. I also think without medical support my child would be severely disabled or dead. Midwives aren’t infallible but Nature’s way would be to have many more of us or our children die. We need to trust medicine even if it’s messy and staff make mistakes. During our most vulnerable time and with our most precious loved ones, mistakes or misjudgements are as terrifying as they are inevitable, but they’re doing their best.

    >When The Journal contacted the doula who assisted Naomi last summer, she gave a statement that said:

    >“This is a very distressing time for all involved. Naomi was an absolutely sensational woman and birthed her baby boy with incredible power. I won’t be making any comment or confirming any details that Naomi’s family haven’t made public,” she said.

This Cailleach makes money with seminars and gets to feel important by convincing others to risk their life. And the result are children without their mum.
I wish there were legal consequences for anyone acting in such a despicable way!

Horrific, I think people are so comfortable with what we can do and survive medically speaking they forget up until 80 years ago pregnancy could be a dangerous risk and death was common. We are the Pinnacle of our medical knowledge let’s use it

  8. Everything went to shit during my birth and I got rushed to surgery. I cannot believe people are doing this. It’s like going back 100 years.

Some people really do want to drag us backwards in time.

In medieval times pretty much the only way to give birth was at home. And THEY knew enough to have a midwife there. And STILL one in two babies died.

My first pregnancy would have killed me had I not had extensive scans and a planned c section and its likely tje baby would have died too. Pregnancy and birth were killers regularly until very recently.
