“Last week showed that there were 5,405 eviction notices issued” and there are currently 1830 rental listings on daft in the entire country. The governments answer to this is to send emails to landlords begging them not to. We are so fucked. This is such a mess.

Government implements quick fix economic policies and kill the rental market, they were warned this would happen. I’m not surprised to see their popularity fall. Rent caps have always, always, affected supply, and can’t be implemented in isolation.

Can somebody please explain how these new rules are encouraging evictions now? I don’t get it, from reading the articles it seems only a small proportion of landlords are affected and also give them the power to change the rent after the 6 years mark.

Government emailing people?! That’s absolutely insane. What a waste of resources. Every piece of data says rental controls don’t work- but they didn’t anyway for populist reasons. They need to stop doing stupid things

Introduces legislation that caused landlords to sell up in other countries
Shocked when the same happens here and we’ve no rental supply
The government definitely aren’t our best and brightest

Small local landlords are selling off, large international funds are swooping in. Good work.

Small landlords can’t cope with the volume and complexity of rental regulations, especially when things go wrong with a tenant.
Add in taxes and rising costs which can’t be matched with rent increases and now the future inability to sell when they retire or fall ill for example and need funds.
It’s not just the governments fault tho – the left wing parties all wanted more taxes and regulations on the rental sector.
Group think is truly awful sometimes.

The new rules are so confusing and they only have 3 example scenarios up on the website so I understand landlords panicking and selling up tbh. A mess.

This country will be used in future economic case studies on how to completely destroy a rental market. Things will get substantially worse.

That old chestnut.

The govt really is so incredibly stupid – it’s almost hard to believe. Is this how you end up believing conspiracy theories?

The way that these changes to protect us were altered due to the WHINING of landlords yet here we are believing their sob story again. Not sure what sort of charities people think small landlords are running. If the Americans and Saudis are buying up housing government needs to get off its capitalist holes and do something about it
